Is Moxifloxacin a good antibiotic after a surgery? I had a buccal fat pad removal and my doctor prescribed Moxifloxacin for infection. I read in Wikipedia however that Moxifloxacin should be limited to the treatment of proven serious and life threatening bacterial infections. Did he prescribe the right drug?

What antibiotics help treat Legionnaires Disease? (moxifloxacin HCI?)? Does Avelox's Moxifloxacin HCI help treat Legionnaires Disease? it can help with pneumonia so I was wondering if it can help with that too.

bactiman63 replied: "Yes moxifloxacin has been effective for treating LD. Newer macrolides like azithromycin has also been effective. Antibiotics that are effective must be able to achieve high intracellular concentrations. These include drugs out of the following classes: macrolides, quinolones, ketolides, tetracyclines, and rifampin."

Is the antibiotic avelox moxifloxacin pennicillian based? My sisiter was prescribed this by a clinic and she forgot to tell them she can not take pennicillian is Avelox a type of pennicillian?

the_only_solorose replied: "Avelox is a synthetic broad spectrum antibiotic, it is not penecillin based."

kndykisz replied: "I dont believe so....i believe it is erythromicin based...but better check with your doctor first...or call the pharmacy...they will be able to tell you if you just call them and tell them what you have and ask if its pennicilian based"

Mad Roy replied: "Avelox is a fluoroquinolone and is not even remotely close to penicillin chemically. There should be little or no risk of cross sensitivity."

How long does it take for an ear infection to cause permanent hearing loss in my 6 month old? It has been over a month that my 6 month old baby has had an ear infection. The doctor gave her antibotics for 5 days which did not work. She was then given Moxifloxacin and it did not help. My baby picks, and pulls at her ears and does not sleep like she used to before the infection. How long does it take for an ear infection to cause permanent hearing loss? Thank you for anyone that can help. I am worried about her losing her hearing.

chris h replied: "It depends on what type of ear infection this is. If it is an external ear infection then there is no real worries. If it is a middle ear infection then scarring of the ear drum can cause hearing loss. An untreated infection can travel from the middle ear to the nearby parts of the head, including the brain. It would be a good idea to go back to the doctor and get it cleared up."

N replied: "Permanent hearing loss is usually only an issue when the patient has multiple ear infections that result in scarring of the tympanic membrane (ear drum). In that case, the scar tissue prevents the drum from vibrating well. One ear infection would be unusual to cause hearing loss, but can result in long term fluid behind the ear drum that can decrease hearing."

namairb2 replied: "No way should a 6 month old have this infection this long. Are you taking her to a pediatric ENT? Please do so asap so you can find out the problem and have it corrected. To prevent her from pulling on her ears place mittens over them when she does this to prevent any transferring of the infection to somewhere else in her body. She also might need a shunt placed in the ear so that it drains more efficiently. This is a common procedure in children this age. Good luck and God Bless BTW- When you call for an appointment explain what the problem is so that they can see her right away."

Jack replied: "It is common for children to have ear infection. Usually 2-3 ear infections before the age of five is usual. Ear infections in childhood does not cause any permanent ear problems in most cases. In most cases it resolves and the damage to the tympanic membrane is healed with a minor scar sometimes which does not cause any problem. But change the ENT surgeon if the one treating you is not solving the problem. Keep the child under observation of the ENT till he says it is OK. Recheck after 1 month to make sure the tympanic membrane is fine. But don't worry about hearing loss at present. Even in worse cases only a partial hearing loss will occur."

Dunshaw replied: "It usually does take a few infections, but it is better not to risk the hearing loss; see an pediatric ENT; if it's a buildup of fluid or any other blocking in the ear, they can safely have it removed. Best of Luck"

The Dr gave me 2 AVELOX 400MG (moxifloxacin HCI) and never said what for. I would like to know what for!!!!!.? I went in for major pain in the middle of my chest. It is worse then heartburn. It goes straight through to my back. She (dr) came back in room and started talking and told me to take these over weekend if I can not get to the Dr. But she never told me why to take them. It may also have something to do with my gall bladder. But I don't know.

Amanda~Ashley replied: "call the doc's office back and ask to speak with someone who knows what the pills are for...or call your local pharmacy and talk to someone about what the pills are for and what they do and get all the information you can on the pills...that might get you the answer you are looking for. Good Luck :)"

Saved replied: "I did a search and it says it's an antibiotic used to treat lung or sinus infections as well as bronchitis: Avelox (moxifloxacin hydrochloride) is an antibiotic that is highly active against many different bacteria, including those that are most likely to contribute to acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, and community-acquired pneumonia. Avelox has also been proven effective in the treatment of skin and skin structure infections and intra-abdominal infections caused by certain bacteria. Avelox rapidly travels to the site of infection, and provides fast clinical recovery. Avelox has a well-characterized safety profile, and has been used to treat more than 40 million patients worldwide. "

hello replied: "Moxifloxacin is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. This medication belongs to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic only treats bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness."

i had strep throat...the doc prescribed me avelox(moxifloxacin)...and im having palpatations.....? my throat is cured....i have no fever and the mucus is also almost finished...i took the avelox for 7 days.....and for the last two days im having weird palpatations....i have never had them before....i was just wondering that i read somewhere that avelox is not the best for strep throat and i was thinking that my throat cured on its own...and i also read that if proper antibiotics are not taken than the strep will heal but heart can develop problems....should i be concerned but then again avelox is a broad spectrum antibiotic

allheart replied: "you should be asking your doctor these questions"

loves christmas lights replied: "A reaction to med should of happend as soon as you started taking it. I think you are really dehydrated and dont realise it. Start drinking at least 6 ounces of water every hour all day long. Take a bath or shower to moisturise your skin and nosttils, you can also go do to the ER with the med bottle and have them check your heart out, were you on otehr meds? If you call a pharmacy they too can discuss that medication with you. The strep most likely did not go away on its own, and the Dr knows what he wants as far as medication intervention to an illness."

LINDA R replied: "As allheart said, you should be asking your doctor these questions."
