Does every baby get a rash from Amoxicillin? My baby is only 6 months old and today the dr prescriped her Amoxicillin 4mls 3 times a day for 7 days. She has never had an allergic reaction yet to a drug. But I have heard most babies do get allergic reactions to the drug and i have seen pictures. She just had her first does about half hour ago I am terribly nervous that she is going to get a rash or some other symptom. How likely is it?

Due August 26th w/ #2 replied: "No one I know has ever had a rash from Amoxicilin. It can happen, but it's not "most"."

banderson replied: "No, not every baby gets that. This indicates an allergic reaction. I have 4 children and 1 of them (along with myself) are allergic and get a red rash if taken."

Elizabeth; Elliott's Mommy replied: "My son has been on amoxicillin for 8 days now for a double ear infection, and he does not have a rash. I had not heard of that before...im sure your little girl will do just fine, just keep an eye on her!"

Abigail's Mom Lost TC Badge replied: "Not every baby gets a rash and a rash is a sign of a allergic reaction to Penicillin. When my daughter was 3mo, she had to be on Amoxicillin for an ear infection and on day 4, she broke out with hives all over her body and her ears and face swelled up. So we know now, she is allergic to Penicillin. Thankfully, she hasn't had to be on an antibiotic again. It is not highly likely as Amoxicillin is one of the mildest antibiotics. But, if your daughter does happen to start a reaction, stop the medicine and call the doctor. The rash lasted about 3-4 days on my daughter after the meds were discontinued and she was fine."

jpsnowie replied: "No, mine didn't. Don't worry =)"

~Aislings Mum~ 09.25.08 replied: "As far as I know, it's not very common. We found out that my sister is allergic to Amoxicillin after she was prescribed it and broke out in a rash. It's most likely an allergic reaction in your daughter as well. You should give the doctor a call and let him know that she broke out with a rash after her first dose. If it is in fact an allergic reaction, he'll be able to tell you how to get rid of her rash and he'll also keep it in her file that she has an allergy."

Brent replied: "no its probably an allergic reaction"

hstris replied: "neither one of my boys have ever had any problems with it."

L. V replied: "My daughter had an allergic reaction to Amoxicillin had a very bad rash over her whole body. This did not happen on the first time she ever took it, this was after her second time of being prescribed the med. What I found out was that most allergic reactions happen after the first exposure. If she gets a rash call your doctor right away, IF she has something else happen call 911. Also having this happen to my baby and scaring her mommy and daddy so badly I have learned to talk to the pharmacist. Ask any and all question and you can call them to ask if you think of something else later. Just hang in there nothing has happened so don't hold your breath thinking it will, but always have a plan in case it dose."

RN replied: "no, all babies do NOT get a rash with it; if she does, u need to stop giving and call the doc immediately; it could be an allergic reaction to the drug; a common side effect of antibiotics is looser stools, if they become really diarrhea like, you should also call your doc, although generally that is considered adverse reaction and not an allergy...gl, hth"

My 16 month old has a terrible rash from Amoxicillin. The benadryl is not helping, he can't sleep, any advice? Can i give him zyrtec, tylenol or motrin since he has already had benadryl? He saw the ped this morning and it's definatly an allergic reaction, he hasn't had any Amox since last night. She said just to try the benadryl, but he hasn't selpt for more than one hour today and he is restless, but the rash is really bothering him.

Julienne's Mom Preg w/ #2 replied: "Ask his doctor! He may be allergic to Amoxicillin and could have an even worse reaction if continues it. My 15 month old is on it right now and I just looked at the bottle and it only mentions causing diarrhea, not rashes. She hasnt had any reaction, definately ask a doctor. Edit: If he's on it because of ear infections like my daughter is, her doctor said that they sometimes get rashes from ear infections. Could that be it?"

Rachel R replied: "i dont know where in the world you are, but we have something here called fenergen, it is given for like allergies, bites, rashes etc, its a antihistamine. And it knocks them out too lets them have a good sleep. I would recommend this, as my daughter is allergic to everythign from sunscreen to mosquito bites, this works. Or just some baby antihistamine like claratine or something. then see your doc as soon as you can."

allgoodwithgod replied: "I agree if you haven't call your doctor right away. If you have called I'd call again since it isn't helping. DO NOT given him anything else until you talk to your doctor. I don't care if it past midnight I'd call the doctor again. I had an allergic reaction like that at age 7 which I clearly remember. It was like ants crawling inside my skin and it was awful. So my mom took me to the doctor and I remember getting a few shots to stop the reaction. It was horrible."

tavira replied: "First, if your baby exhibits any signs that he or she is having difficulty breathing or swollowing, then I would take your baby to the emergency room. I would continue giving the benadryl every 4 to 6 hours. You can give Zyrtec instead of Benadryl, but if the Benadyl isn't helping, then the Zyrtec likely wouldn't do much either. Either Motrin or Tyenol could be helpful, and may make your baby more comfortable. One thing that may be helpful is to give your baby a bath using Aveeno oatmeal bath. That can sooth irritated skin. Just be aware, that if the allergy is severe enough, that rashes caused by drug allergies can take several days before they look better. Good Luck"

gravybaby replied: "children can get yeast infections from antibiotics. My son had/ has frequent ear infections and we had a regular rotation of all types of antibiotics, he would get a red raw lacy rash on his bottom from medicine clearing out of his bowels. Poor dude, it was painful and until I figured it out I was putting desitin on it. this was not the right solution, we had to use an anti-fungal, ( like monistat) Please check back with your doctor, ( or nurse) and help Home remedies: have him eat yogurt, drink cranberry, avoid apple juice. hope this helps"

ummTalal replied: "The dr gave my son benadryl and he was up all night as well, screaming at that. It make some kids unable to sleep and even see things (its really strong). I took him off of it and will never give that to him again. I can not even believe Drs say for kids to take it. The pharmacit was shocken she even told me to give it him. It sounds like your giving him a lot, I would just relax on all the meds. He will heal very shortly so do not worry but do not drug him anymore. Also, my son got an yeast infection before from this med, (amox) so watch out for your daughter. It really hurts them."

Anna&Thomas' mommy replied: "keep him cool. try a lukewarm bath and light pj's. Heat just makes the rash even worse. tylenol wont hurt him and benadryl is was my doc recommended when my son had the same reaction. Dont give him anything not approved my a doc though because they can be harmful. I know it sucks right now but I promise it will get better. I took my son to the ER when he woke up at 2AM with a rash from the amoxicillin. It sucked. I am sorry your son is having problems sleeping but benadryl makes them sleepy so relief should come soon. good luck."

Rash from Amoxicillin...what should I do? I started taking amoxicillin on Wednesday for a toothache. Friday morning, I noticed I had a small rash (2" by 1" or so) on the top of my hand where my middle finger connects to the hand. The rash is pink with lots of small little bumps (almost like really little blisters). It itches a little bit, but it's not severe at all. I have called the dentist, but am waiting to hear back from him. I've read on here about some much more sever sounding reactions, but should I be overly concerned about my rash? It appears to have spread just a little bit over the weekend, but not much. Should I take Benadryl for it? Would the Benadryl reduce the effectiveness of the amoxicillin? Also, I noticed a small rash by my armpit, but I recently switched deodorants and this may be cause for this. The rash is different on the armpit. It's a little pink and puffy, but has no bumps. I'd appreciate any advice/insight you can provide. **Thanks in advance!

bones replied: "It may state in your pre ion information that you should discontinue medications if you have any rashes, as this can lead to a more serious side effect. Please read it, and follow the precautions. Your doctor may discontinue you current medications and switich to another one."

Datuna replied: "some allergic reaction maybe i think nothing sreious.consult with your doc."

Chick-a-Dee replied: "Oh its nothing too concerning, I get them all the time lol But I haven't figured out what it is I am allergic to. Take some benadryl if you like, it should make it a little better. Call a pharmacist if you want to know if you should discontinue taking the medication. They are usually really good about letting you know if the reaction is something to be terribly worried about."

fishndc replied: "It's probably best to hear back from the physician that prescribed the antibiotic. Doesn't sound like it's an allergic reaction to the med. They are typically much more systemic and not localized like yours is. If it gets worse and seems to be progressing and you have not heard back from your dentist you might want to go to the ER and have it checked out."

I developed a rash from amoxicillin....? I developed a rash from amoxicillin a week ago, I went to see my doctor...it turns out it was an allergic rxn....I just took some benadryl for it and it went away after about 3 days. after going running today the rash is back (not as badly) on my legs...should i be worried? or it it just irritated and will go away?

monstermind replied: "if it came back in a minor state, I wouldn't be overly concerned about it, it might still be in your system. If its occurrence becomes chronic then you should seek medical attention."

Aaron K replied: "take some benedryl"

bonnie b replied: "see if you can get medicated cream to help the itching from the doctor"

My 12 month old is on amoxicillin for an ear infection and now has a rash from it.? I know that it can be a side effect, but to me it seems like they are too quick to put kids on antibiotics and I'm just wondering if it is necessary for him to be taking it. The rash is on his stomach, chest, face and backside. I talked to a nurse who sounded like she was reading the info from a manual, so I ask any of you who have had experience with this. Thank you for any info.

amber_36532 replied: "My daughter has been on amoxicillian twice now..for ear infections..she never got the rash but i have seen it-they usually give the baby nystatin to clear up the rash..but i've never seen it go father than the diaper area...I would make a dr's appointment if it were my child..I feel t antibiotics are necessary to clear the ear though-"

daizysara replied: "sounds like an allergic reaction... if your child took it more than 2 times, then they can get an allergic reaction.. its not to early if they have an ear infection.. the only way to cure it, is thur antibiotics.. stop taking the antibiotics and go back to the dr tomm!!!!!!"

RAVEN replied: "Yeah I have personal experience from my own childhood. Your child is allergic to it; that's not a "common" side effect. There's nothing common about hives. Stop giving it to him and call the doctor back and insist on something else. You don't want to let an ear infection go untreated. I once had one so bad that the pressure from the fluid build up ruptured my ear drum and once it healed, I didn't hear as well out if anymore."

kitchd replied: "tell your doctor. the pre ion may need to be changed to a different medication, which will not cause such a reaction and you'll probably need a cream to help you get rid of the rash. good luck ."

mystic_eye_cda replied: "The guidelines on antibiotic use for ear infections (see below) state that antibiotics are only RECOMMENDED if ALL of the following are true: *abrupt onset *fluid in the ears *CLEAR evidence of an inflamed ear drums. No other children should be offered antibiotics. Parents of children that meet the criteria can be offered antibiotics, but they can also choose watchful waiting. However the problem is that now that your son has been on antibiotics, if you stop you can create antibiotic resistance which is something no one wants. The consensus, evidence-based 2004 guidelines recommend that children under 6 months of age with red hot ear infections should be treated with antibiotics for 10 days and pain relief for at least the first 24 hours, whether or not the diagnosis is certain. Remember, antibiotics do not help pain during the most painful first 24 hours, and help pain only minimally after that. Kids 6 months to 2 years should receive 10 days of antibiotics and at least 24 hours of pain relief for a red hot ear if the diagnosis of an acute ear infection is certain (it must be an abrupt onset, with physical certainty of fluid in the ears, and clear evidence of an inflamed eardrum all 3). If the diagnosis of an acute infection is uncertain in these kids, they can be treated with pain relief and observed without antibiotics, (well talk about what this means soon), unless theyve had a fever of 102.2 or higher in the last 24 hours, or severe symptoms. Once children have reached their second birthdays, pain relief and antibiotics are recommended if both the diagnosis of an acute infection is certain and the illness is severe with a fever of at least 102.2 or symptoms of severe illness. Otherwise, observation and pain relief can be the better course of action. Most kids without a high fever dont need antibiotics for ear infections. Of the 10 million annual antibiotic pre ions for ear infections, somewhere between 8.5 million and 9.5 million pre ions didnt actually help the children, according to the best medical research (and according to the American Academy of Pediatrics). Put another way, we have to treat between 7 and 20 children with antibiotics for ear infections before one child benefits from the medicine. About 80 percent of ear infections will clear up easily without antibiotics. For those that dont, often the antibiotic wont help either. Sometimes it does. In 5 to 14 percent of children, the antibiotics will take one day off the length of the ear infection. But by comparison, up to 15 percent of children who take antibiotics will develop diarrhea and up to 5 percent will have allergic reactions, some of which may be quite serious. Wouldnt it be great to limit antibiotic use to the children who really need it?"

sassykmom replied: "My daughter is allergic to penicillin, she took it for an ear infection and got a rash also. Hours after she took it the rash came out. I stopped it immediately and went to the doctor the next day. He just switched the antibiotic. The more you give it to the child the more sever the reaction. For example first the rash and then possible breathing problems. Tell the doctor You think your child is having a reaction. Better to switch than to take the chance getting worse."

Brain Babe replied: "My child was about 16 months or so and broke out in hives from the antibiotic Pediazole...the doctor instructed me to put him in a lukewarm bath and to give him a dose of Benadryl to combat any itching that might occur. The big worry is if there are any breathing problems or swelling of airway, mouth, tongue,etc....in that case, you would have to call 911 for an ambulance, as it would be a medical emergency. The child that had so much trouble with meds is turning 18 this week! What we discovered was it wasn't his ears that was the problem, but was his tonsils, which were rotting in his throat, according to the specialist we took him to. They came out at 4 years, and his health improved 100%. Studies now indicate that most kids do about the same whether they have antibiotics or not...if you don't feel you are getting the best care, get a second opinion and don't be afraid to make a switch--I did...I got tired of chasing the pediatrician down the hall, calling after him, "What did you say was wrong with my son?" because he would examine him and try to tell me what was wrong as he was running out the door. Good luck--and don't forget--Mama usually does know best!"

Rash From amoxicillin? I took amoxicillin for strep throat and got a rash 3 days after finishing taking it. The rash went away 5 days after. Its been 16 days and i still tich. Is this normal

Stephen replied: "2 possabilities. 1) you had glandular fever not strep throat and its very common to get a rash with amoxycillin or 2) you are allergic to amyxocillin"

vickiebrat replied: "When I did that my doc said I'm allergic. Also to penicillin, tell your doc!"

What to do about a rash from amoxicillin? I started taking amoxicillin a week ago for swollen tonsils but I noticed I started getting a somewhat itchy rash that looks like little pink dots all over. It started on my arms, chest, stomach, and back, but as the day has gone on, it's spread down my legs an up my neck and it just keeps looking worse. I've been off the medicine for two days and I started taking benedryl today but it doesn't seem to be helping at all. Has anyone else experienced this? What works and how long does it take until it goes away?

daVIDica replied: "You need to call the doctor that prescribed the antibiotic and tell them that you are breaking out in a rash. They will then prescribe you a different antibiotic. You don't need to abruptly stop taking an antibiotic. That's what causes these super strains of bacteria. You were given those antibiotics for a reason. Call the doctor ASAP."

When Should I become concerned after developing a rash from Amoxicillin? Was just diagnosed this afternoon with a right ear infection so my doctor perscribed amoxicillin. So, i started taking the medicine around 5 o clock and now 11 o clock 6 hours later i have slight itching on my legs and arms and it looks like a rash MAY be developing but theres not many visible bumps that I can see on my arms or legs. And as of this moment i dont have shortness of breath fever or sore throat or anything. I've had allergic reactions to prilosec before which ended up causing a rash and I was fine. So should i be concerned?

lilyelizabethsnape replied: "If I were you, I'd take a benadryl, quit taking the amoxicillin, and call your pharmicist or doctor asap. You don't want to mess with allergies to meds. If you develop shortness of breath, big hives, or eye swelling, you should probably head to the ER. Sounds like that won't happen, though."

seekingthedarkness replied: "well, there is no relation btween prilosec and amoxicillin and some ppl have allergy to pencilline and its derivatives like amoxicillin,so i recommend u to stop it and see a docotr thanks"

Can you drink alcohol while on amoxicillin rash? I've just fully recovered from my sickness after finishing my antibiotics requirements. However, the antibiotic is giving me rashes but not-itchy. It seems to be fading out slowly after a few days. But I'm wondering if drinking alcohol (huge amounts) can make it worse again?

Chloe W replied: "well as i learnt this weekend thaat stuff actually stays in your system after you stop taking it. made a tootal fool of myself on 5 drinks! usually i can handle way more than that!!! i wouldnt drinking but who knows everyones different right. hope that helps"

Jenna replied: "If you've finished your course of antibiotics you should be fine to drink alcohol. It's common to get a little rash from antibiotics, but mention this to your doc next time they want to prescribe you antibiotics because you might have a very small allergy to amoxycillin."

How do i get rid of amoxicillin rash? Its gross to look at and its all over my body except for my head.. Please help.

Cowgirl Nurse replied: "Quit taking the amoxicillin. You're obviously allergic to it."

greg31463 replied: "She's right, stop taking and follow up with your health care provider, you may need a new antibiotic to treat what ever your condition is. Try taking Benadryl, 25 to 50 milligrams 3 times a day, should help with the rash and itching."

kelly e replied: "Both are correct - call your MD and let them know this antibiotic caused a reaction AND now what should you take for whatever you needed an antibiotic for (unless it was the end of the course). Soak in an oatmeal bath several times a day. Take a benadryl drink a lot of water to flush your system."
