Nexium Protonix Or Prilosec in Answers
If you take heartburn medication (prilosec, protonix, nexium, etc) can you still get food coming up? I've taken almost every kind of heartburn medication there is.. and it DOES get rid of the burning feeling, but food still goes up my throat and out my mouth, and it's disgusting.. anyone else have this?

balibot replied: "i dont have this problem, but those medications just inhibit the acids. sounds like you have a problem with the pyloric sphincter. Try sitting up while you eat and even up to 2 hours after you eat. I would make an appointment with a specialist if this problem continues."

Sarah B replied: "You got more going on than just GERD. Make sure you are not laying down after eating, and don't over stuff yourself. Watch what type of foods you eat also. I had to delete a lot of things from my menu. Make sure you are drinking a lot of water also. I found that helped a lot. If this happens at night when you go to bed prop your head up higher in the bed. Make sure you tell your doctor about this also."

Miss Lee replied: "I don't have this BUT I really think you should try Slippery Elm Bark. It is an herbal remedy that can be bought at GMC or any place that sells herbal supplements. I was near surgery and as a last resort my dr. reccommended it and it has changed my life."

sofantabulous88 replied: "Girl, I am the queen of heartburn, lol. But yes, that's happened to me before. My mom has GERD as well (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). I take protonix and prilosec as well as gaviscon. But after awhile, it still wasn't healing that much. So I started trying home remedies. And let me tell you, I think it's gotten much better (knock on wood) ever since I've been doing those plus taking pills. Drink ice water with a twist of lemon in it. I drink it all the time. I don't even drink soda or caffeinated beverages anymore. Acid reflux is actually from your stomach NOT producing enough acid. Lemons are acidic, so I guss it's adding to the acid to make it go away some. Either way, it works really well. Also try eating a banana. For some reason it's always helped me with heartburn. And last but not least, chew gum! I know that soudns weird, but it really works. Whenever I get it really bad, I chew gum. Make sure it's sugarless though. I think by constantly swallowing, your saliva is soothing your esophagus. Anywaym try ad not to eat as many junk foods. Eat more healthy and drink more water (with lemon!) Lol. I've been doing that, and it's gotten better. Hope you feel better soon. God Bless!"

New report: people who take heartburn drugs such as Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid and Protonix for long periods.. have a significantly increased risk of hip fractures. i am using prilosec since years now. so should i start taking calcium supllements in order to prevent the risk of hip fracture?

salty replied: "First off, talk to you doctor. Secondly, think twice about continuing prilosec on a continual basis. My spouse has read the same article and has the same concerns."

Jimmy replied: "Not necessarily, remember this is just a report/study...Most of this is just based on experimental values. It works for some people or it doesnt work. You know the scenario. But of course, check with your doctor because he/she probably knows what's best for you (even though this is just a supplement)."

Doctor J replied: "Prilosec (and all the other acid blockers) are well documented 'dangerous' drugs. They cause bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine in 100% of patients taking them. They also cause malabsorption of numerous nutrients, including iron, calcium and vitamin B12. You might want to find a doctor that will work with you to find and fix the CAUSE of your heartburn, rather than masking the symptoms with a dangerous drug. If you cannot find a good doc, then you may find a wonderful book by Sherry Rogers, M.D. very helpful. It is called: "No More Heartburn". Dr. Rogers explains the many causes of heartburn and other gastrointestinal problems and how to relieve symptoms by treating the underlying cause(s). I highly recommend this book. It is available at Amazon.com or from the publisher at 1-800-846-6687. Best wishes and good luck."

Has anyone tried nexium or equivant medication with alcohol to decrease hangovers or excess of alcohol??? I work in a cardiology office as a RN, and one of the nexium pharmaceutical reps told me that nexium, or equivants such as protonix, prilosec or prilosec OTC, or aciphex (proton pump inhibitor based drugs used for heart burn or acid reflux disease, can decrease hangovers in the am, when taken the night before and in the am when waking up. I discovered that nexium or eqivalent works even to decrease the negative side effects of alcohol with one drink too many. Has anyone ever noted this before and if so, how does it work??? Would love to hear from people if this has worked for them and better if they know why. Prilosec OTC worked for me in the past as well, and without pre ion.

lovepepsired replied: "no never. for a hangover just drink pedilite and you will be fine in 30 minutes guaranteed."

southbank_100 replied: "I would be suspicious of this, this is certainly not the primary indication for this drug. Hearsay and probabaly unethical conversation from the drug rep. It will act to reduce stomach acid, if this is your primary hangover symptom but this is not the same as a hangover cure......"

Stomach problems, Please help me!!!!? I have been suffering from nightimt nausea for about 5 years now and nooone has any explanation. Ive seen a gastroenterologist and he has diagnosed me with gastrists (swelling of the stomach) but he's not sure why a person my age (24) has this condition. I've tried several different medications with no luck. I've taken protonix, nexium, prilosec and the only thign that seems to help is pepto bismol, but I cant take that forever. I've cut out every prob food beef, pork, anything citrusy, tomat products, caffiene, chocolate and now dairy. And still no improvement. I'm goin to see a new doc but until then I have to suffer, does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be happening? Please I'm running out of ideas and suggestions One more thing i've had an EGD done and a biopsy and they found no traces of an ulcer causing bacteria in my stomach so that rules that out.

Wayne replied: "Have you tried a strict vegetarian diet? Learn about Fasting, I don't know if that's your answer, but look into it. Good Luck. Have you been checked for food allergies?"

Desert Lady replied: "Sorry to hear you are ailing in this way. You need a full and proper work-up by a qualified gastroenterologist. There are so many things that could be the source of your discomfort, from allergies to ulcers, and lots of other causes. By the way, "gastritis" is inflammation, not swelling, and can have many different causes. For your doctor to just tell you you have gastritis is not very helpful at all. That's like going to the doctor to find out what's causing your head pain and he says "You have a headache" !! You need tests and a diagnosis."

Is there a proton pump inhibitor or acid reducer that does not cause constipation? Following my gallbladder surgery two years ago, I have had a constant pain in my upper abdomin (in the center). Several proton pump inhibitors seem to help the pain - protonix, nexium & prilosec - but they all cause constipation. I am already constipated and using laxatives (usually herbal), but these make it intolerable! Is there anything available that won't cause constipation? Note: I have already tried most herbal products related to this - dig. enzymes, probiotics, aloe vera, etc... Any help is appreciated! Thank you.

jackmatt replied: "Those are supposed to cause diarrhea & stomach cramping as side effects not constipation. Have you tried Prevacid. Talk to a GI doc. RN"

Froggie replied: "Yep, Zantac or Acimax, we started on Zantac but have now gone onto Acimax, both are pre ion medication, and neither constipate, my partner has the same problem (although his is due to nerve damage from a broken back and lazy bowels that he inheritted) The Acimax has a web site they should be able to help, my partner always has good old epsom salts for constipation, hes had movical, bislax etc., and nothing works, he can eat a whole box of laxettes and they do nothing, try epsom salts with warm water of a night and make sure that you drink lots of water, cause that helps to ease constipation too, lots of roughage in you diet will also help, you could also try metamucil, but that didnt work on him, I personally have tried all the probiotics etc., did nothing for me, also you could try mylanta if you have acid reflux, but your best bet is the Acimax, neither of us have had any problems since we started on them, use the web site I gave you and they maybe able to tell you what to use in your country, as some medicines are just named differently country to country, I wish you relief, I know how hard a time my fiance has, I hope this helps, Goodluck!!!"

GERD/anxiety/gagging reflux? with much experience/research, does anyone know which of the following works best for GERD? i have a bad case of it, mostly linked to some foods and anxiety situations... * Aciphex * Nexium * Prevacid * Prilosec * Protonix * Zegerid zantac, prevacid, and mucinex are three products that have not had much affect. please help me out, and thank you...

sweet sue replied: "Prilosec used to be pre ion and was almost $3 a pill. It is now over the counter for about $30 for a month supply. I know the box says not to take for more than 2 weeks but I took it by pre ion for years. It used to be advertised as "the purple pill". When it was getting ready to be OTC the manufacturer came out with the improved purple pill, Nexium. but no one tells you that. Protonix seems to be the most prescribed one I see these days but Pepcid and Prilosec both are OTC ow and work well. Talk to your Dr. about it. Just an fyi, mucinex is for coughs to liquify sputum in the lungs, it has nothing to do with GERD."

Heather replied: "I have a bad case as well. I've tried all of the things you listed except for Mucinex, Protonix, and Prilosec and the best combination for me so far has been Aciphex along with Zantac combined. It really seems to depend on the person though. I also try my best to stay away from spicy foods and anything high in acid. Good luck"

doris_38133 replied: "Before Prilosec was available over the counter, my doctor prescribed for me Nexium, which is expensive. Then he told me about Prilosec and I could buy it over the counter and really take it every day. Because they told you not to take it over so many weeks, you should see your doctor for more serious problems, but some people don't have serious problems, just that things like Tums or Rolaids don't help their situations. He said it was safe to take every day forever!!!!! You just have to make sure you don't have throat cancer and stomach cancer which can cause this symptoms. Other than that it is like taking a Pepcide every day, nothing more. Mucinex is a chest and sinus mucus drug, not for you stomach. It is for congestion only. Read the box, it will tell you what it does"

fisherwoman replied: "Is it possible that you have a Hiatal Hernia, combined with acid reflux symptoms. This type of hernia is the only internal hernia, it is usually near the top of the stomach. It will allows acids and other digestive juices, to back into the esophagaus, in the same manner of Gerds. Staying in a vertical position, after eating is helpful, using gravity to keep things down. Don't eat anything, one hour before bed, and no drinks, say 1/2hr. I would address your anxiety issue, as well. If you are aware of situations that raise your level of anxiety, try to avoid those, if possible. I know, easier said, then done. I guess I mean, try to modify your behaviours, to avoid having anxiety behaviours. Don't put yourself in a place that is uncomfortable, until you feel you can face it, head on. I would think an antidepressent would be helpful, see the doc soon if possible. It's better to get it under control, so that your life is not dictated by this. And, the double wammy is, your GERD symptoms are likely irritated by, or may be caused by the anxiety. And the cycle keeps going, do you see what I mean? Anyway, I hope you feel better, and get your questioned answered. Good luck."

I have a constant feeling or pressure or heartburn in my stomach? Ok... So I have pretty much been living with acid reflux for the last 5-9 years and have taken everything you could imagine... (previcid/ prilosec/ aciphex/ protonix/ nexium) well they all seem to work for a little while and the last one I was taking nexium 40mg/day was doing great up until March/April of 2008 when I had to have emergency Gallbladder Surgery... After the surgery I have this constant pain in my right side (like a runners cramp), and this constant feeling of pain/pressure/burning in my tummy... I have followed up with my surgeon and have done the ultrasounds and the cat scans of the abdominal area and nothing comes up but a slightly fatty liver (I have high cholesterol)... Does anyone know what it could be??? Also I am hungry and I will eat and food just doesn't taste good anymore... **I have started to see a GI doctor and he is doing all these test to check for blood clots in my legs, lungs, chest, etc. Why doesn't he just check the area of the pain???** I also am extremely tired all the time, and a diabetic... Who is also anemic!!!

queenbee replied: "My husband suffers with acid reflux and he started feeling pain on his right side and feeling very hungry...like he couldn't eat enough. First the doctors thought that is might be kidney stones but it turned out to be his appendix. Have the doc look at those areas if they haven't already. Hope it all works out ok. Good luck :)"

Mary replied: "I wouldn't be surprised if you ate at least one of your daily meals in a laying down position?"

Medical question on proton pump inhibitors? Have studies been proven that Nexium. Aciphex, Prilosec, or Protonix is more effective than others for Barrett's esophageal disease? Personally I have found Nexium to be most effective but are there others statistically with a higher success rate in reducing acidity? I have to talk to my G.I. when I have my next endoscopy. Although I have insurance, now that prilosec has gone generic I might try it. But I remember trying aciphex and protonix after lots of pepcid not working; and the only thing I found that helped was the nexium.

Peter & Paulo replied: "I take Omeprazole 20mg and for the last 7 years have not been troubled with acid reflux Peter P&P :-)"

GERD Medicine???????? So I have been having the problem for a long time and the most annoying thing about it is the mouth taste after eating and drinking something. I tried Omeprazole (Prilosec) for 14 days and didn't really work. I heard about Protonix, Zantac, Nexium and Prevacid. Anyone have any suggestions like anyone used those medications before and actually helped them with the acid reflux?

Sarah replied: "Omeprazole always helped me. :("

keltillos replied: "Protonix is probably your best bet. You might also try calcium antacids before or during meals. 14 days isn't really long enough for Prilosec or Protonix to have a noticeable effect."

JoKTM replied: "I used Prevacid but it is a presciption. Prevacid worked well for me and Protonix made me throw up more than my GERD did. When I lost insurance I used Zantac 3x a day."

Sacra Veritas replied: "Those are all foreign chemicals to the body. Read the side effects warnings. The best thing to be doing is to be taking a natural food enzyme with every meal. You can buy these supplements at reputable stores. The problem is that you are not digesting your food properly. Meats are likely rotting in your intestines. Digestive enzymes are naturally found on foods, the problem is that we tend not to eat fresh veggies. Fresh is a relative term, by fresh, I mean pick it and eat it. Enzymes depleat quickly after the food is picked. After just 12 hours, 50% of the enzymes are depleated. With that in mind, how fresh do you think the veggies are in the store? Hope this helps."

janie replied: "I know you asked about medical drugs, but my brother did cure himself of severe gerd easily with a simple treatment and I tell how here. He has never been bothered agian for several years. see all the posts by knowledge seeker under this topic as later I give more details. also here is another suggestion "
