do mirtazapine tablets make you drousy? Im due to start a night shift at 9pm tonight and have been given mirtazapine by my doctor today but am abit worried about taking them incase i cant stay awake.

catdog replied: "Mirtazapine does make you drowsy which is why people take them before they go to bed. This anti-depressant is often the medication chosen when the person has sleeping problems too as it is sedating."

How long does Mirtazapine take to work? I have been given Mirtazapine 15 mg for mild depressions linked to Insomnia. I have been taking them for just over 3 weeks. I have experienced drowsiness the first couple of weeks which has worn off but feel lower than when I started. However I am also (as a result of six months of insomnia and depression) five weeks out of a nine year relationship with my partner. So it is difficult to tell if what I am feeling is just a broken heart. The patient information leaflet, various websites and fourms say that it can take up to four weeks before you start to feel better but I wondered if anyone has experience feeling worse before feeling better with these tablets, or if this means they just dont agree with me. I have arranged to see my GP this week to discuss it but wondered if I am being impatient.I am also seeing a councellor once a week.

Rags replied: "It takes between 2 and 4 weeks for most anti-depressants to kick in. It can depend on your weight. If you are smaller it will kick in sooner. I have major issues with insomnia and depression. I also get an anti-histamine from my doctor which has a slight sedative to help me sleep. They arent addictive and can help a bit."

martinalantowers replied: "with anti-depressant drugs it varies from individual to individual it took me almost a year to sort out the correct medication for me to take. one of the side effects is that you can feel worse before you get better you are best speaking to your doctor about this and counselling does help,"

Martin B replied: "It took a while to work for me ( about a month ) it has worked for a while , i am having problems coming off it i've been on it for about a year & a half i cant realy feel the benefits anymore my sleep pattern is rubbish again . The 2 times i gave it up i had major relapses , sorry this is not a good answer just the truth for me , good luck"

rach534 replied: "as with all anti-depressants it will probably take between four to six weeks for iot to work. good luck."

littlebethan replied: "It can take up to 6 weeks for Mirtazapine to work. You should feel brighter once it starts to work, Mirtazapine is quite an effective anti-depressant. It is quite a low dose though. I nurse a number of people on 45mg. If you don't feel brighter after 8 weeks see your doctor and he might increase the dose or change you to another tablet."

cheeky replied: "I know exactly how you feel,it's awfull when you feel this way. You feel as if there is nowhere to turn but you have to grin and bear it for a little while. You're in the lucky situation in that you have a councilor and a gp to see. just tell the gp what's going on and i'm sure he/she will see you that you are ok. The other thing you need is friends around you to get you through this,.a lot of people start off with talking to people who are totally annonymous and then go on to talking to friends, but beware there are a lot of people on the internet that will take the p1ss out of you. It's hard to judge who these people are so just tread carefully. Take it from me i've been bitten and have been left lower than when i started...."

Melinda replied: "Hi, Your best bet would be to check out All natural, without any side effects and helps tremendously. It has proven to be the best and most effective natural cure I've come across so far. You'll sleep like a baby! Hope that helps. All the best, Melinda"

pooterpet replied: "don't be scared of going back to talk to your doctor, that is what the doc is there for. you need to be careful with anti depressants as different ones affect people in different ways and not always positive, that is why it is important to keep your doctor informed of how you are feeling... try ans see if he can refer you to a counsellor or check if there are any you can go see privately if you have the money..leaving a relationship that long is going to be hard and there is a lot for you to deal with. where are your friends, hopefully there is at least one person you can open up to, get them to spend time with you and try and talk... best of luck"

cala s replied: "im on it its can take up 2 4 weeks if you still feel ill speak to dr im on 45 mg its the best tab out there remmber if you have flu or poorly your tab stops working till your well xxxx dr told me this"

How do give Mirtazapine to my cat? Hi I was given Mirtazapine for a medication because my cat has been having a low appetite recently and the container came with a few crushed-looking tablets inside. I tried forcing my cat to eat the tiny tablets, but she would not allow me to and she would later throw the piece that was given to her. I tried again, this time crushed and with some of her food, and that time hopefully will be a success and she would be more hungry and eat and be healthy again. Any suggestions on how I should feed my cat this Mirtazapine for her appetite loss? Thank you.

theshadowknows replied: "Our previous cat needed various medications for the last couple of years. I really didn't want to stress her out by trying to force pills down her throat. So we always kept a jar of baby food (Gerbers chicken or turkey - plain, with nothing else added to it) and hid the pill in the food."

Tiken replied: "Crush it into a fine powder and add water 1 ml- which is the same as one syringe without the needle- you can get them for free at the pharmacy usually- use the syringe to give her the medication- they have to swallow the liquid. From behind the cat, place one hand on the side of his face- open palm and approach the opposite side with the syringe- it goes in the easiest from the side of the mouth- don't try to hold the cats head with the other hand - it is only there so the cat will move in your direction cause he doesn't want you touching his face. I works every time with my Charlie- Another way may be to crush it up and put it in some peanut butter and then spread it on one of his paws- he has to clean it off out of impulse- this works real good too- good luck"

I think I have become dependant on mirtazapine to sleep? I was put on mirtazapine at the end of July a few days after my trip to A&E with a large overdose. This is my second antidepressant, the first I had to stop cold turkey after I suddenly became allergic developing a rash 9 weeks into the course. At the time of going onto these tablets I was sleeping ok, but was straggling to get to sleep. I told my gp this, the reason I wasn't getting to sleep was that everytime I went to bed, I started crying violently, but was ok once I calmed down. With these tablets I am normally dead to the world within 1 hour (it was 20 minute when I first started them). I have missed a dose twice now. The first time was early into the course, when I was still dopey and out of it throughout the day. That time even though I was tired I couldn't sleep, it took me ages to get to sleep and when I was asleep I kept waking, and it took me ages to get back to sleep. The second time was Monday night. On Sunday night I had next to no sleep (I know the reason for this, it was my fault). On Monday I was working hard all day carrying heavy items whilst helping my sister to move house. I went out for a meal on Monday night to celebrate my best friends 21st and got drunk (hence why I forgot to take my tablet). So there were 3 factors which meant I should have been out like a log 1 - had little sleep night before 2 - busy physical day 3 - very drunk But it still took me forever to get to sleep despite being tired and exhausted. I woke up twice, and on both occassions it took around an hour to get back to sleep. As my sleep wasn't like this before I think I have become dependant on mirtazapine to sleep, which makes me worried about when it is time to come of it!

iaindude replied: "go back to the doctors adn ask to see wether or not to be taken off or the dose lowerd"

rickster1 replied: "I take 15mg of Matazipine to calm my anxiety, but also take citrapram as well, it did make me sleepy at first but now i am fine, although they just about keep me going!"

Mahadelic replied: "I'm a little confused about what you're asking here. I can tell you about mirtazapine though. It's a novel antidepressant, which is highly sedative, and is often prescribed for people with sleep/anxiety problems. It is unusual, in the way that at lower doses it is more sedative. This is due to it's pharmacological profile. As you increase the dose, it has more of an alerting affect, but is still relatively sedative. As I mentioned above, it is very helpful for sleep problems. I think you just have to weigh up whether you're better off taking it or not. It's an antidepressant, and therefore has to be taken for quite some time to be of any benefit to you. If it helps to improve your symptoms, I wouldn't worry too much about becoming dependant on it to help you sleep-if you feel this is a problem, then you can always taper yourself off the medication under your doctors supervision."

simon h replied: "Hello There have been no documented cases of dependence on mirtazapine (zispin) neither in clinical settings or trials. Mirtazapine is a unique antidepressant, but at the start of treatment it is very heavily sedating and it will literally knock you out but this affect will soon wear off. I feel you are perhaps confusing this tolerance to the sedation with your worries of addiction to the drug perhaps?? Even if a drug sedates you, it does not mean you will sleep well on it - i know this sound odd but in medicine its called akasthesia, its that restless - cant sit still feeling. If you are suffering from mental health problems, sleeping well is very important. If you feel that your medicine if affecting the quality of your sleep then you must see your doctor to discuss this and possible switch antidepressants."

how long would it take 30mg of mirtazapine to completely get out your system? ok so been taking them for about 9/8 months and been contimplating coming off them, i have ran out of pills and its the september weekend ,iv not had a tablet since thursday night and i feel ok..... i was wondering if the tablets are out my system just now and i would become sick it i didnt continue them? its been 3 days thanks ps. i have not done this on purpose just forgot to get more

Joe replied: "half life is 20-40 hours so 80 hours should do it depending on your metabolic rate."

mummy me replied: "it depends on the person but alot of times it takes months for this to be fully out of your system. if you phoned NHS 24 and explained you had ran out they would have been able to advise you but if you are feeling alright then just keep an eye on yourself and see the doctor asap."

Censure 455 replied: "Mirtazapine's half-life is is 37 hours for females and 26 hours for males, you have been off of it for 3 days or 72 hours: Male: 30*(0.5)^(72/26) = 4.398 mg Female: 30*(0.5)^(72/37) = 7.786 mg Those are the amounts in your system assuming your body's metabolism falls fairly close to the standard. If you drink more liquid your kidneys and liver will be able to process it more quickly but most doctors will assume it completely cleared from your system since the remaining amount is usually not active."

mirtazapine as a sleeping tablet? I have been given mirtazapine because I have difficulty sleeping on a night. I have suffered from anxiety in the past and my doctor decided to give me 15mg tablets and told me to take one on a night as a sleeping pill. They have not had many bad side affects. It has changed my life as now I sleep on a night and get up in the morning and I am not late for college. However when I do not take it I get very restless on a night with a lot of brain zap sensations. Do you think I am becoming dependant on it? Also my ankles are swollen and the tops of my feet are red. My shoes are very comfortable for me normally.

gardensallday replied: "In general, sleep experts think sleeping pills are a bad idea. And after a couple of weeks, studies show that the pills don't work anymore - patients just THINK the pills are working. But if you hook them up to monitors in a sleep study, it is clear the pills no longer work. You will find this if you google "sleep hygeine" and see what sleep experts have to say. Sleeping pills should be avoided in general. Anyhow, below are my generic sleep tips Google "sleep hygeine" Here are my sleep tips: Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even weekends. Do only boring things that last hour before bed. no exercise, no computer or TV time. Avoid bright lights (the TV and computer screen light wakes you up too). Make sure your bedroom is totally dark, including covering up that digital clock and shutting the drapes/blinds/shades. Exercising during the day will tire you out so you sleep well later. Avoid caffeine. A morning cup of coffee is OK, but nothing after 1 PM or so. Some meds like cold remedies (Sudafed, etc.) can ramp you up, too, look for the "agitation in children" label-some adults get trouble too, Try meditation like progressive muscle relaxation or guided imagery. It reduces stress. See The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook by Edmund Bourne for examples. There is a free 15 minute guided imagery download at healthjourneys.com. Try a noise generator or CD of ocean waves or soft music to sleep if you live in the rackety city. Get some MP3 downloads at soundsleeping.com Don't use your bedroom for anything but sleep (or sex, if you are an adult). No computer, no TV, no reading in bed. If you are worrying about what you have to do the next day, then get up and write down a list of what to do, then go back to bed with your mind more at ease. If these things don't work after a month or so, you may have depression interfering with your sleep, and you should screen yourself for that. there are online depression screening tests. Or there could be something else medically wrong. Don't take Ambien, Lunesta, etc. they are addictive and only work a week or so, then you're hooked and they aren't really helping anymore. (But you will get rebound insomnia if you quit). Good luck! Google this topic and you will find some things I'm sure I forgot."

Blackcompe replied: "I don't know what "brain zap" sensations are although I've heard many people speak of them. Anti-depressants don't cause dependency in the way you might think of a heroin, coke, or alcohol addict. Yes, people depend on them to function normally when they have a condition, but generally, anti-depressants don't cause tolerance issues and withdrawal symptoms. The issues with your ankles may be an indicative of an allergy or edema. You should probably consult your physician about that, but in the mean time you can discontinue the medication if you don't like the side effects. Oh, and Mirtazepine, Trazadone, Nefazodone are good first choices for insomnia. The Z-drugs, zolpidem (Ambien) is very addicting. It's addictiveness is comparable to Xanax, which is more addicting than alcohol."

tablets in wrong box? for the last 2 days now i have not been felling to good after i take my tablets in the morning so i was just going through them and found out that the pharmacy has put the wrong lable on the box it says lansoprazle on the lable but on the box it has mirtazapine i have looked at the the tablets and they are mirtazapine no wonder i feel tired and dizziness all the time can i sue or is that to much

millie replied: "yes you can sue and once more you can report them to the medical council or some one ask the c.a.b citizens advice ...thats realy bad it could of happend to a child and killed it..report to higher peron and to your dr dont let it go..."

Tapestry6 replied: "This country is totally suit happy, what you need to do is call the pharmacy and get the right product. Call your doctor in the morning, tell them what happened too so they can lean on the pharmacy to correct their mess up."

jacked fibras replied: "you'd have to prove that your health is in danger now cause of it.."

Sarah Kate replied: "Luckily nothing terrible happened to you, but I would be pretty upset. I would call a lawyer and see what kind of case you have. They'll let you know how the legal system works in a case like this (because I really am not sure). You might be able to make big bucks off of this, but it also might not be worth bringing to court. If you have no case against them, go back to the pharmacy and ask for the right pills free of charge (and a refund for the wrong ones). Let your doctor know what happened, too. Use a different pharmacy in the future."

What would happen if you overdosed on over 100pills - Would you die? 9 Very strong sleeping pills - Mirtazapine. 28 anti-depressants - Citalopram 28 blood pressure tablets (I don't have high blood pressure, there not mine) - Levothyroxine 80 prescribed painkillers - Cinnarizine O by the way i am not suicidal, this isn't for me.

Midnyte replied: "Yes. That someone's liver and kidneys would shut down."

Emaster replied: "Theoretically, but it all depends on how quickly they are taken, how many milligrams of each pill, and if their expiration date is in check"

angiea276 replied: "Yes, or worse, you could become a comatose and/or brain dead vegetable."

John de Witt replied: "Who the heck knows? Some of those work at cross purposes to others, and God only knows what's in the blood pressure pills."

Big Weenie replied: "death and overdose kinda work together most times... and by the way...dont kill yourself... we all know it was for you... youd def be doing some matrix stuff"

jen replied: "Figure that out yourself. I swear people ask the most redundant and stupid questions on this forum. Ya, i only answered this, cause the question pisses me right off."
