How does Neurontin work on the nerves to stop pain? I have a herniaed disk in my lower spine and was prescriped neurontin 300 mg to take only at night. A friend has neuropathy caused by diabiets and he was prescribed 300 mg neurontin to take 3 times a day. He was told by his care provider that the neurontin burned out the nerve endings to stop the pain. What we really want to know is, How does Neurontin actually work on the nerves? Does it destroy the nerve endings?
Cheppyyyyy replied: "According to my significant other who has Myotonic Dystrophy , it helps his ability to relax the muscles in his hands. But you should be aware of some serious side effects of taking this medication. It has been known to enhance feelings of depression in some patients. Your Doctor can help answer your questions. Also, it is never a bad idea to consult with your pharmacist. Blessed Be."

Definition
Gabapentin is a pre ion drug that was initially approved to help manage epilepsy. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also approved gabapentin for treatment of the nerve pain that sometimes accompanies herpes infections. Gabapentin is available in the United States under the trade name Neurontin.
Purpose
Although the FDA has only approved gabapentin for managing epilepsy and treating nerve pain associated with herpes infections, doctors often prescribe the medication for managing other conditions, including tremors associated with multiple sclerosis, nerve pain, bipolar disorder, and migraine prevention.
De ion
As an antiepileptic drug, gabapentin may be used in conjunction with other drugs to prevent partial seizures. Partial seizures are caused by brief abnormal electrical activity in localized areas of the brain. Partial seizures usually do not cause unconsciousness, but may cause rhythmic contractions in one area of the body or abnormal numbness or tingling sensations.
Although gabapentin was originally approved by the FDA in 1993, it is still not understood how gabapentin prevents seizures. However, the drug is related to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurochemical that possesses inhibitory properties. In brain cells, these inhibitory actions prevent excitatory electrical impulses from spreading to neighboring cells. As a result, gabapentin probably prevents the spread of abnormal excitatory activity in the brain at least in part, by mimicking the actions of GABA.
By preventing excitatory communication between cells, gabapentin may also inhibit the electrical impulses involved in pain conduction. This may account for the drug's ability to alleviate pain, especially nerve pain.
When gabapentin is used along with other therapies for managing epileptic partial seizures, improvements should be observed within 12 weeks. On the other hand, pain relief may be evident within one week when the drug is used for pain associated with herpes infections.
Recommended dosage
For adults, the initial dose of gabapentin is 300 mg taken by mouth three times each day. The dosage may be increased if necessary. Dosages as high as 8001,200 mg three times daily have been well tolerated."
lilwee4 replied: "Neurontin (brand name) is gabapentin. It slows nerve synapses between the nerves. It does not destroy nerve endings. I am on 3600 mg a day now, and the feeling in my feet is close to normal, whereas before they would burn and tingle. It is used as an anti-seizure medication, and people have been on it for years. It is now available generically as gabapentin, and will save you a TON of money if you get the generic medication. Your friends care provider is someone who he should NEVER SEE AGAIN, in my opinion, as that is so unprofessional."
What's the difference between the medications Neurontin and lyrica? I have seen advertisements for lyrica (or pregabalin) and heard it's just a stronger form of Neurontin or (gabapentin).
It's also in the control class while gabapentin is not.Does anyone know the major difference if any?
sista mafia replied: "pregabalin are related to gabapentin. Neurontin has few side effects which include sleepiness, dizziness, unsteady gait, fatigue and eye twitching.Gabapentin appears to be relatively safe and has not been shown to interact with other drugs except for it's potential of added sedation. Gabapentin may interfere with the reading of N- Multistix in detecting urine protein. Whereas,Alcohol and drugs that cause sedation may increase the sedative effects of pregabalin. The most common side effects of pregabalin are dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, edema (accumulation of fluid), blurred vision, weight gain, and difficulty concentrating. Other side effects include peripheral edema, reduced blood platelet counts, and increased blood creatinine kinase levels. Increased creatinine kinase could be a sign of muscle injury, and in clinical trials three patients experienced rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle injury)."
How long does Neurontin stay in your system? And is it considered a controlled substance such as speed? I have to take a drug test today. I took a non-prescribed Neurontin pill yesterday, will it effect my drug test if they are testing for narcotics such as speed, opiates, etc.
jayhawker replied: "First things first, I would ask why you took a non-prescribed Neurontin. Gabapentin, tradename Neurontin, is an anti-seizure medication which is also used to treat certain (and very specific) pain conditions. Its dosing needs to be closely regulated, and there are a couple of very serious but rare side effects including a life-threatening rash and in fact, seizures. If you took the pill from someone who is prescribed Neurontin, you need to understand that that person has likely already been started on a lower dose of the drug and worked up to the higher dose.
That said, Neurontin has an elimination half-life of 5-7 hours, if you have healthy kidneys. That means that half of the drug will be gone from your system in 7 hours, 75% gone in 14 hours, 87.5% gone in 21 hours, etc. As far as I know, commercial drug tests do not routinely screen for Neurontin and I don't believe there is any cross-reactivity with controlled substances.
Moral of the story: DO NOT TAKE MEDICATIONS WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN PRESCRIBED FOR YOU!"
What are the side effects of taking neurontin and advil? I have a pre ion for neurontin (for restless leg syndrome). When I have any aches or pains I take advil (over the counter pain med). Will there be any side effects or chemical reactions?
trhwsh replied: "You would do best to call the Dr. or Pharmacy on this one. They are the ones that can legally give you a safe answer on this."
What are the purposes for the doctor prescribed drug of Neurontin? My physician prescribed this to me to relieve some of the discomfort associated with chronic back pain. I've looked it up on the internet and see that it is commonly prescribed for siezures. Is this also an effective drug to relieve back pain as well, or was this perhaps prescribed in error. I've had steroid injections in my lower back an gotten some relief. I would really like to hear from those with knowledge of the drug Neurontin as well as those that have had the steroid injections for back pain and what kind of results you have experienced with both. Thankyou!
ladyangelovely replied: "Though its most commonly used as an anti seizure medication, Neurontin is now increasingly used to help control chronic low back pain. It can be especially useful in patients with nerve pain caused by degenerated discs.
Anytime you question the validity of a pre ion, contact your doctor and ask why they gave you that particular medicine."
pimpc6961 replied: "Neurontin is the same thing as an Alive. It's just a pharmaceutical grade Alive. So when you go back to your doctor tell him or her that this Alive is garbage and to come off of something that actually works."
dizzie replied: "they had me on it for a while too. it was suppose to help with the nerves sending signals of back pain to the brain. thus no signals no pain. my problem was not corrected by Neurontin (because of nerve damage) but i have had surgery and pain therapy which has relieved alot of the more intense pain..now if i could get rid of the constant nagging pain i will be happier. have to wait out the nerve regenerating process. good luck"
Katz316 replied: "Neurontin was originally made for controlling seizures. They have found that Neurontin has good side effects with include the control of nerve pain. It helps, I can't say that it controls it. It is also a mood stabilizer and I have seen it used in the psych area and it has had good effects on several of the residents. I have also seen it prescribed to diabetics that suffer from neuropathy (nerve pain). There are many reasons for this medication and you should ask your doc, he could be more specific. I never had the steroid injections in my lower back. They went from 6 weeks of staying in bed and physical therapy to surgery. That has been 16 yrs ago. It was a good thing for me but it is different for everyone. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't."
Silva replied: "http://www.rebuildermedical.com/neurontin.html
I have seen Neurontin prescribed often for neuropathic pain that is unrelieved by other medications. It appears from reviewing these links that there is a bit of controversy going on regarding its use.I do not have personal knowledge of the steroid injections but anecdotally have heard that they do not offer a long term solution and the steroidal drugs used also come with a laundry list of side effects.I have suffered back pain in the past and the only treatment that I advocate or that has provided any real relief is chiropractic treatment. A good chiropractor will evaluate your backs condition using x-rays and possibly MRI which youve likely had done already anyway, and advise you on some alternative options."
Is there anyone who has previously or continuously taken the drug GABAPENTIN (NEURONTIN) while pregnant? I have been taking 800mg of neurontin 4x a day for 6 years now for neuropathic pain all over my body. (I don't have epilepsy) I wanted to soon try to conceive but wished that there were more studies of this anticonvulsant drug and pregnancy. I thought it would help to stop the drug months before trying but would like to know the outcomes of some births with this drug.
Amanda replied: "I've never used the drug while pregnant, but being educated in pharmacy, the pregnancy category for Gabapentin is "B". That means that either the animal studies showed that nothing happened to the fetus during pregnancy or that animal studies showed an effect but human studies did not. I would discuss this further with a doctor to see if the risks outweigh the benefits, but I would think that you'd be ok. Gabapentin is in the same pregnancy risk category as common Tylenol (acetaminophen/Paracetamol)."
Can Neurontin help with multi level disc disease? My husband just had an MRI and it showed that he has multi level disc disease and will potentially need surgery-until the surgery (our appt with Neuro surgeon is 3 months away!) could Neurontin help him with the pain?
Aspasia replied: "Neurontin helps with NERVE pain only. It also takes a little while for the drug to start working; and if the doctor prescribes this medication they will likely start him on a low dose. If he is still having nerve pain, then they will increase the dose.
I take this medication for nerve pain due to nerve damage/scar tissue following spinal fusion and laminectomy surgery. I started having problems two days post-op, and I was started on a low dose in the hospital, and the dose has been increased a couple times following my discharge.
Also, this is important; do NOT stop taking this medication suddenly. Withdrawal symptoms could occur, and the doctor will reduce the dose gradually to avoid this.
I know how it is; I had to wait two and a half months to see the neurosurgeon, then another two months for the surgery. After months of pain management, it was getting hard to get my employer to understand the situation. Hopefully your husband can get his surgery done sooner than that, so he can be on his way to recovery.
I wish him luck."
How long do I stay on neurontin? I am on neurontin for pelvic pain. It is working great, but I want to have a baby in a few years. How long do I stay on neurontin for pain? If I go off to have a baby, will the pain come back?
I've been on neurontin for about a month. I'm just seeing if anybody else has experience with going off of it-for example, does the pain come back? Does it depend on the condition?
annsky replied: "I'm not a doc, but I have taken neurontin for back pain. You haven't given enough details (like how long you've been on it, and what kind of pelvic pain), but I would stay on in till your doc says its OK to get off. And tell your doc your worries about pregnancy. Sorry to say, but this is a question for a medical professional, not the yahoo answer site.. Good luck. Being in pain sucks, I hope you keep feeling better."
Rose Bridge replied: "you shouldn't cut off neurontin by ur self u should ask ur doctor .. and then u can cut it by decrease ur dose .. i think the doctor can handle it easly .."
What would happen if I took Neurontin? I have recently come across a giant bottle of Neurontin. I have no medical use for it whatsoever. What would happen if I popped a few? Any trippy side effects?
BlondeJeeper replied: "NO, it's not a pain killer or anything like that. It's mostly used by diabetics or people with certain disease's that have caused them to loss the feeling in there extremities. It would most likely just make you sick."
Gretchen Anne replied: "I took Neurontin for Anxiety once (the doctor thought it would help I guess).
Well It was AWFUL!!! I ended up in the hospital until it passed out of my system because it caused dizziness and racing thoughts...
Neurontin is an anti-convulsant/mood stabilizer/nerve pain relief medication sweetie. Not a party popping pill....
Don't touch them! You'll regret it. I sure did and I was prescribed them! lol"
Bullwinkle BILF replied: "It might make you take off your clothes and make out with a real moose of a man, but that is just a hopeful guess.
Good luck, I hope I helped"
paramedicgirl replied: "ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TAKE THIS!!! NO, you won't get any "trippy side effects". I was prescribed this years ago for migraines (new med + dumb doc), and still have lasting effects from it. I'll have problems finding correct words at random times, which I never had before, and the neurologist that I eventually went to said that was one of the side effects.
But then again.. if you're a pill-popper.. SURE! Do the world a favor & take the whole bottle! Then there'd be one less worthless person in the world!"
Why does neurontin and lyrica cause weight gain? The drugs Neurontin and Lyrica have side effect of weight gain and I wonder what the reason is for that side effect.
tiger1943 replied: "I believe they slow the metabolism, and make you lethargic."
Jill J replied: "I don't know. What I do know is that Neurontin can be prescribed for a number of reasons. It deals with the neurotransmitters of the brain and it is primarily prescribed for epilepsy, however I have also seen it given for anti-psychosis. Lyrica is prescribed for fibromyalgia and I am not sure how that works. I would be advantageous enough to say that with Neurontin that once the neuro transmitters are affected in any way it could very well slow the metabolism"
Tom C replied: "I have been on Lyrica for 6 months. I take it for nerve damage in my legs caused from blood clots. The medicine is expensive ($200/month). I gained 10 lbs while on the medication and the doctor said that I would just have to deal with the gain because I needed the pain relief. The pain relief is worth the cost. When I stop taking the medication I will lose the extra weight because it is just accumulation of water."
