How did the drug Premarin come about ? I am doing a research assignment on Premarin and am struggling to find any information on how it came about . I have found that scientists first discovered that they could extract estrogens from the urine of pregnant women back in the 1920's (for therapeutics). They then found that women and horse (mare) urine was very similar so started to extract estrogens from mare urine instead . Does anybody have any more information about the origins of this drug or any hormone replacement therapy relating to Premarin ? Thanks

Aine replied: "Yes, the word Premarin comes from "Pregnant mares urine". now it is synthetically made."

Naloki replied: "Premarin is a replacement for the estrogen that is no longer being supplied by ovaries. There are lots of arguments about the effects of Hormone Replacement Therapies both pro and con. It is a decision that has to be made by each woman and using correct information-not just word of mouth info without any evidence. I elected to go on HRT after a hysterectomy and removal of both ovaries because I have a very bad family history of heart disease. HRT has been shown to lower the risk of cardiovascular problems. I also don't want to deal with osteoporosis and the fractures that are common with this condition. My mom has been on Premerin since 1976 and she is 81 years old and looks 62 or 68. She's never missed a dose and is doing great. No one in her family has lasted to their 88's and I believe the HRT has a bit to do with it. My concern with Premarin is the way it is produced. It is made by using horses and I just have a personal problem with the way it is done especially since there are so many synthetic substances but that is also a personal thing. Hope this helps."

CDRN replied: "She's on that because they also took out her ovaries and she does need hormone replacement until she is of age to start menopause. Its just controversial when you are in your 50's and 60's that it can cause problems......."

beadingbusily replied: "I took it briefly after my hysterectomy and it didn't hellp me at all, but everyone is different. Your mom needs to take it easy. A hysterectomy is major surgery. While it can help some women feel better, I think that it has been linked to breast cancer."

Violettaa replied: "I had a hysterectomy 10 years ago and started on premarin the same day. I have never had a problem with the medication and will take it for the rest of my life. Your mother will be very glad she had the hysterectomy, I know I have never regreted it."

BettyG replied: "Firstly let me say that Premarin is too widely used by American women. Premarin is the most widely-sold DRUG in the USA today. According to an AARP Modern Maturity Magazine article a while back, 84% of women who enter menopause receive an HRT Rx to solve ALL their problems. The giant pharmaceuticals are laughing all the way their respective banks."

Veleda replied: "Premarin is a brand name for the hormone, estrogen. Your mom probably had both her ovaries and her uterus removed during her hysterectomy. When the ovaries are removed, the hormone estrogen is no longer produced. I amguessing your mom might be in her 40's, and that's a young age to not have any estrogen anymore. estrogen is needed to protect your bones from not losing density by helping keep calcium in. estrogen is also beneficial to the muscle lining of the arteries, thereby protecting your mom's heart. estrogen is a good thing, unless your mom has a history of breast cancer, or anyone in her family. In that case, taking estrogen could increase that risk. Your mom will be followed by annual mamograms, and she should be doing breast self exam monthly, as should you, too. If you are still concerned, call her doctor or nurse practitioner with your questions."

Monserat replied: "Hi, I have been on Premarin for not quite six months now. I'm 47. Like my mother and my sister I had a very early menopause and stopped having my periods approx. 6 years ago. I have been VERY happy with Premarin. I sleep better and do not have those awful hot flashes. I did have some problems at first with water retention, but that has gone away. I have noticed since talking Premarin that my hair and skin has come to be in better condition. I would attribute that to the re-introduction of estrogen. It also helped my sex drive to return. Before going on Premarin I tried the so-called natural hormone replacement with mixed results. It did alleviate some of my symptoms, but controlling dosage was very hard. My best wishes to your mom. I am happy for her that she has a daughter so interested in her wellbeing."

edkusxv replied: "CONJUGATED ESTROGENS (Premarin, Cenestin) contains a mixture of estrogen hormones. Estrogens are essential for maintaining normal female functions. Conjugated estrogens can help relieve symptoms of the menopause (hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, and vaginal dryness and irritation), and also help to prevent osteoporosis (thin weak bones). Conjugated estrogens can also help improve female functions in women with hormonal imbalance or problems with their ovaries. Cheap premarin"
