can i give phenergan to my dog? he is 70 lbs.? it is for skin allergy. i have given the dogs benedryl before but not phenergan. i will contact my vet first,

Rexydoberman replied: "Really need more information specifically the symptoms you need to treat. I would consult your vet.. many human drugs are OK for use in dogs but the dosage can be quit different."

chihuahua.owned replied: "Nope and it doesn't even exsist by that name anymore. Dont give your dog no drugs unless you check with your vet first."

maggie replied: "I believe Phenergan is an anti-nause med. Your dog may be throwing up for a reason. Never give a dog a human medication without a vets approvale. He might have eatten something poisonous or is sick. Call your vet."

Charles & Elizabeth C replied: "Call a Vet. That is a very powerful medicine."

gentleannie replied: "Why?? any human Med should be gone over with a Vet first, Zantec & pepcid have different ingredients, the only med like that I was ever told to give was when my dog was being treated for renal failure, when we crossed the worst and could come home after a treatment for 5,000.00 nausea was a problem and she was given 10mg of pepcid and she was about 75lbs, and it should not be given for vomiting, without talking to a vet."

Crystal replied: "The only veterinary application I have ever seen for phenergan (promethazine hydrochloride) in dogs is for atopic dermatitis at the rate of .2 - 1 mg/kg (kg equals 2.2 pounds). I have never seen it used for nausea like it is in humans. Vets usually prescribe metoclopramide for nausea. If it is nausea you are trying to treat, try something natural like ginger cookies or peppermint and seek a vet's opinion as to the cause."

Sick Puppy...Vomitting...Can we give him a kids Phenergan suppository? The nearest vet is too far to get to tonite, but our dog is vomitting. Can we give him a Phenergan suppository? Does anyone know? We HAVE called the vet and are waiting on a call back, but it's taking a while, so thought I'd ask here too. Actually, I shouldn't have said "puppy", the dog is 3 yrs old, but that is young for his breed. The vet said the Phenergan would be fine. I was able to find an emergency pet clinic within 50 miles, and took him there instead though. He's doing very well now. thanks for all the input everyone.

Karen W replied: "No, God no. His body is trying to RID itself of something (toxins, who knows what?) Just make sure he drinks plenty of water or even pedialyte (puppies dehydrate quickly) and make a vet appointment ASAP."

Goldengal replied: "NO please dont give that to your pup. Wait for the vet to call back and get his or her advice."

sniffydogs replied: "Sure! IF YOU WANT TO KILL HIM! Wait for the vet or GO to the vet."

Whitney B replied: "Did you change your puppy's food? This may be the cause. If she's vomiting and has diarrhea after you switched her food, let her fast for one day (just giving her a little water). The next day, she should be fine and you can start feeding her again. If the problem persists, my vet told me to give my dog 1 cc of Immodium for an upset stomach. If the problem gets out of hand, call the vet and tell him/her the symptoms."

Shawnee replied: "My thoughts of a puppy vomiting is not good, is there loose bowel movements? If you have both these symptoms there is a possibility of parvo. I hope that you are current on the puppies shots. Don't give him anything. If he is vomiting everything up without stopping, get him to the vet immediatley. I'm having flashbacks!!!! My puppy had all the symptoms I mentioned and died within 4 days from parvo."

Tyler W replied: "no but if you bive it alitle pepto bismol it should calm its stomick down. remember just a little"

naughtyheathertx replied: "We recently expierenced similar symptoms with one of our dogs. Pepto, Childrens (human) anti-nausea liquid medicine, and as well you can give a dog a small amount of benadryl to ease the vomiting. Do not give all of this to your dog at the same time, or alternate. Give one or none and wait for the vet. *** I am NOT a vet, Call your vet for his advice. This is just from our animal expierence."

bayou7673 replied: "You can give a little Pepto Bismol. Did u administer any flea or tick meds? My Mom's chihuaha just died & I'm sure that the Advantix product was the cause. I have read many horrible stories online about these products. If you did use something like this, wash him thoroughly with dish washing detergent. These meds are extremely dangerous!!"

My dog has just been spayed - Questions!!? My dog got spayed today and when I first picked her up she was sort of fine just seemed a bit sore. Now as the afternoon has come on she is acting worse. She is shaking and very anxious acting. The vet gave me Novox for pain and I have read on here that is for Osteoarthritis in dogs. I have Phenergan tabs at home and was wondering if I could give her 1/4 of those. She seems nauseated somewhat. She wont eat or drink!

Brandon S replied: "TO THE VET ! =O good luck !"

Stanley the Westie replied: "Did you keep her there one night for observation. When my dog was neutered they kept him there one night for observation before we were allowed to bring him back. I suggest you call you vet to double check."

Gary S replied: "she has been through a pretty major surgery for a dog, give her time to heal and she will be fine. My dog went through the same symptoms but was back to normal in a few days. Good luck!"

Goldengal replied: "She is acting very normal for a dog right after surgery. The medication your vet gave you is the right thing to give your dog. Do not give her any human meds. Especially Phenergan. She probably wont eat until the morning and maybe she will only take small sips of water. Let her rest and take her out to potty if she wants too. She will be much better by tomorrow."

swearnsue replied: "Did you give her the Novox the vet prescribed? If not, do so. If you did and she is acting this way, call the vet or vet tech and see what else you can do to help her. If you are anxious around your dog and worried, it might make her more anxious, so try to relax. Put her in a comfortable and quiet place to sleep and you should watch tv and have a beer or even better, some ice cream."

flamingsnickers replied: "your dog is probably just getting better. when you get your dog spayed most likely will get more shy. so it will seem it is different but it is really just normal"

critrcrazy replied: "I wouldnt give phenergan. Nausea after surgery is normal. We tell all our clients when they pick up their pets from surgery that day NOT to feed them. They can have a little water late in the evening the day of surgery, but no food until the next morning. Then you can feed them like you usually would. Did your vet tell you to start the pain medication this evening? If so, go ahead and give what he/she prescribed. Chances are the pain medication she had during/after surgery is wearing off and she's feeling the surgery more than when you first brought her home. If they gave you some after-care instructions, your best bet is to follow their advice."

Blue D replied: "You dog just had surgery. While at the vets, she was medicated heavily. The medicines are wearing off. It's completely normal for her to act strange for a couple days. She hurts. I would not push food on her, but offer her ice chips or a little water everyone hour or so. She will feel much better tomorrow. Anesthesia makes lots of pets (and people) ill. I have had all my female dogs spayed, and every one of them acts different. If you're still concerned tomorrow morning, give your vet a call."

karen wonderful replied: "Have you called the vet? I wouldn't give a dog human medications without checking first."

Alyssa replied: "The vet normally tells you NOT to feed her or force liquids on her right away. She will be a little nauseous from the anesthesia, this is perfectly normal. She's probably acting a little weird because she's still coming out of the anesthesia. Do not give your dog any meds the vet did not approve of for this situation; it could react with meds he's already given her and make her very sick. It will take 24-48 hours for her to wear off all the drugs she had today. Just let her rest and don't try to force food on her, she'll eat when she's ready. Call the vet if you're worried, but I don't think there's a problem. Do call a vet if: -the incision swells up, turns bright red, or bleeds -the stitches rip out -your dog drools excessively after 12 hours (a little drool right after she wakes up from anesthesia is normal) -she seems to be running a fever -she can't stand or walk -she starts vomiting or having diarrhea"

Jennifer T replied: "She's most likely fine. Do not give the phenergan. Novox is a good pain reliever. She may be a tad nauseous from the anesthesia. Allow her limited room to roam around and try to keep her atmosphere peaceful. She most likely won't eat or drink until she feels better tomorrow, when she'll be ravenous. If you are still in the least concerned, by all means contact the vet, as much for yourself as for her. You've done the right thing by spaying her."

SM replied: "my dog usally jumps around and is very enegetic the night we spayed her she just layed around keep her inside for a night or two (actually supposed to be a week or two) after that she was jumpity again but if shes still lie that tomarrow call the vet also feed her small amounts throught the day rather tha leaving food out and keep water out"

natc replied: "Vet Nurse: It is very normal for a dog to be in pain after a spay, give her what the vet prescribed and nothing else, she will be uncomfortable for the night, keep her warm, leave her water, if she doesnt feel like eating, that is normal, she may vomit, if vomiting persists, get in touch with your vet asap. Dogs pant and breath rapidly when in pain, obviously with the major surgery she has had, she is in a little pain, dont panic, as said, keep her warm and in a quiet area, the best thing for her is rest. If in doubt, do contact your vet, i hope they gave you a buster collar, so that she doesnt like at the surgical site, if the didnt, go back and get one. You will see an improvement by tomorrow."

liz c replied: "I have had many of my dogs spayed, and that is an unusual symptom. I would be concerned if I were you. I would naturally call the Vet--there is probably an answering service--that poor puppy needs to be seen. I would be concerned about the not drinking more than the not eating. You dont want her to get dehydrated. Good Luck."

Dane Lover replied: "Your dog is acting normal for many dogs after spay surgery.. Do NOT give her ANY meds not prescribed by your vet!!! Give her the Novox as prescribed."

14 weeks and STILL sick as a dog! Any tips?!?!? I am on both Phenergan and Ryglan (I think that is how it is spelled) I take the Ryglan every 8 hours and I can take the Phenergan every four. I am still barfing my brains up. If I continue to loose weight, my doc will order a Pic Line. I had one while I was preggo with my son, it was a pain in the butt. Don't want that again. I have been diagnosed with Hyperemesis, and if it goes the way it did with my boy, I will be this sick until this baby is born! I actually barfed last night because my fiance opened a jar of pickles on the first floor and I could smell them all the way up in bed! How sad is that??!! I could use some tips, I need to if not GAIN some weight this week, at least not LOOSE anymore! Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance With this pregnancy I have been given IV fluids 3 times. With my son (who is 3 now) I was admitted twice for the nausea. At the end of my pregnancy my doc finally just admitted me into the Prenatal Unit at our hospital. It was awful I was there for 4 weeks....

verbalkint replied: "i was sick till 5 months go see midwife or doctor you shouldnt be loosing weight if your pregnant, it is the worse bit about being pregnant, my face was never out of the loo bowl lol"

Elyseholly replied: ":( I'm so sorry to hear you have hyperemesis If my knowledge of that is correct, there's not much you can do once you have that diagnosis except take it easy and drink plenty of fluids! What helped with my nausea was resting a lot, making sure I had food in my stomach, and sleeping it out whenever I could. good luck to you!!!!"

youvewastedyourlifereadingthis replied: "If it is an emergency can't you be asked to be put on a drip? It might be a stupid question idk. Surely there is some vomit-suppressing drugs - or is that the Ryglan etc.?"

Just Me replied: "I bought ginger from the store and made ginger tea. It worked great with the nausea. I didnt start actually feeling better till I was 18 weeks. Dont worry, you will start feeling better soon. Its only temporary."

thecharleslloyd replied: "Have little nibbles by your bedside and a bowl of fruit and nuts. Just have a munch when you want and munch plenty. Eating large amounts of food will only make you feel sick. Eat little and plenty. Good luck"

Pamela C replied: "My sister had this with 3 out of 4 of her pregnancies.. she was finally diagnosed before baby 4 with Lupus.. I don't understand why you have not been hospitalized and given IV fluids? or have you? she was in the hospital several times when the vomitting got out of hand so that she and baby would be hydrated. I would ask the doctor to check your blood platelets.. they have to do a specific test for lupus.. it is very very hard to detect and they literally have to seperate and count platelets. Good luck, i will say a special prayer for you today.. I am sorry you are so sick.. but try to remember it is only for 9 months of your life.. god bless"

New Comp. User!101 replied: "If I were you I'd go to an Herb store and ask for something natural so as not to hurt your baby. Herbs are very safe to use. Good Luck!!"

Antinitra B replied: "hate to tell you but you have a long way to go before that goes away(possibly)"

12w 3d MORNING SICKENSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!? my obgyn gave 2 kinds of pills both generic one is the generic of Phenergan and the other one is phochlorperazine so when i feel nauseated and cant take it no more i take one of them so i just took the generic of phenergan and i still feel sick as a dog! how long does it take to kick in my doc would give me zofran but its over 1,000 and the generic is like 521 do you know if cvs does like a payment plan or something? and my other question is why isnt my medicine kicking in? im drinking alot alot

Baby #2 after 13 yrs due 6/19/09 replied: "I was on ondansetron(generic for Zofran) when i was 6-7 weeks and it worked an hour after. My insurance no longer covers the generic brand, it covers Zofran and that one takes the same time to kick in. You might need to go to the ER to get hydrated. I was degydrated and had to have ER hydrate me. Call Costco. I think they have really cheap generics. Did your doctor check for dehydration?"

christybybee replied: "the Phenergran takes about half an hour to kick in. I used it with my first pregnancy. The shot works almost instantly. Also use it about a half an hour before your first dose wears off. That way you don't have to wait for it to work again."

Itchy Cairn Terrier? Please can anybody HELP!! We have a 7 yr old cairn terrier who seems to have allergies. The vet says he thinks it is related to grasses etc and gives him phenergan and prednisone. However, when the dosage is finished he starts itching again!! He has dry scabs down his back and also gets red lumpy welts on this stomach. Does anyone else have this problem with their dog. Please HELP!!!!!!

Cavalier&BeagleLover replied: "I'd get a second opinion."

Jody L replied: "my carin had that too. i used to wash her with a oatmeal shampoo. it seemed to help her alot."

drezdogge replied: "have her thyroid checked, and adrenal funcrion thyroid problems can make skin insane and the pred may actually be masking things also try a food with no wheat, soy, beef or chicken that is a best odds food for allergy pups"

TxGrnEyez replied: "Have you tried a product called Sulphodine? Not sure of the spelling, but you can get it at the pet store and it is just for itching and rashes on dogs. It's yellow. We used to use it on our dogs back home."

Misa M replied: "I agree with poster #1 - a second opinion would be good. A Thyroid check would be good too. Be sure to get a "full panel" done and have the results explained to you - that's a complicated thing to understand. What are you feeding your dog? Experimenting with a switch to a simple, corn-free food such as California Natural may help. Give him a few weeks on the new food to assess results. Here's a site that can teach you a little about dog food - very useful, though not allergy-specific."

TLT replied: "What are you feeding him? Nurto choice Lamb and Rice is very good for helping clear up skin problems as well as weekly washing with an Oatmeal or peppermint shampoo."

Woke up and not nauseated anymore HELP ME!!!? okay, so the past 2 weeks or so, i've been sicker than a dog with morning sickness. i'm 8 weeks and 2 days pregnant. i was so sick yesterday, i took a Phenergan for the nausea and vomiting. Well i woke up this morning and i was very mildly nauseated and have not thrown up. Maybe i'm just being paranoid because my boobs don't seem to be as sore either. is this normal not to be nauseated some days even though i've been really sick for the past couple of weeks all day?? PLEASE HELP thank you all for the reassurance and support. i always appreciate it. my mom is a labor and delivery nurse and has been for 15 years or so. she ok'd the phinergan so hopefully it's fine. i was just worried because i don't want any medicine interfering with the development of the baby. just paranoid. i've been so scared of misscarying. thanks to you all

Kitty replied: "be happy the symptoms went away for now!!! b/c they should come back and with advengence"

Motherof3 replied: "yes that is normal, i had it all the time,"

2CENTS replied: "Did the Dr o.k. the phenergan. If not call right away and make sure all is well."

Alesha S replied: "Yes it's normal. As long as the medicine you took was ok'd by your dr I wouldn't worry. In my first trimester there were days I would be just fine, and days I thought I was going to die. Just take the good days and run with them cause if you are like me they are few and far between."

Just Me replied: "Symptoms come and go, don't be worried. The same thing happened to me while I was pregnant."

Carrie S replied: "yes! relax im sure your fine! I had good days and bad days there was never any rhyme or reason to why I got sick it was off an on for weeks!"

NaeNae0508 replied: "I never had nausea but from what I understand it subsides at different stages in everyone's pregnancy. If you aren't cramping or spotting, I wouldn't worry about it."

bulldogsfan replied: "I had really wicked morning sickness at the beginning of my pregnancy as well. I did notice that some days it just wasn't as bad. I learned to be thankful, though, because it usually came back worse that night or later that day. If you're really worried, call your doctor, but I would suggest waiting it out. Maybe you're lucky and you'll just get past the morning sickness early :) Good luck!"

Shelly L replied: "Sure is. The morning sickness might be subsiding though, that's about where I was when it went away for me."

kingoffish35 replied: "yes its normal kim stop asking everone"

Me replied: "Yes it's normal. 2 days ago I puked every time I stood up, today I'm fine. Just count your blessings and try not to be so paranoid. I know when can't really help ourselves at this point but we gotta try to stay positive and quit thinking about the worse. God Bless you and your baby."

Matthew's Mama replied: "well it could mean that you're finally passed your morning sickness days..... or it could also mean that you just aren't nauseatued today, because u still have a touch of the medicine in your system, and you could be sick tomorrow... or maybe even later on tonight.... but whatever the case, dont wish you aren't sick! ha!... but as far as the baby goes, he/she is fine.. u don't have nothing to worry about there... just be happy you aren't throwin' up!! also there is this site that i found helpful when i was pregnant. it's called.... www-i-am-pregnant.com. its a site where other pregnant mommies chat, give advice, and ask for advice through out their pregnancy, you can talk to someone in the same week pregnant as you, or in later weeks, or in lesser weeks, all in all i found it to be a great site to "hang out in".. happy pregnancy, i wish u best of luck!"

angel_393 replied: "it's ok! calm down honey you're fine i don't see why NOT feeling nauseous could be a sign of anything wrong but if you are really worried why not call your midwife or g.p.? be thankful the sickness is wearing off i think you only get it real bad at the beginning of pregnancy anyway... or maybe the drug isn't out of your system yet. good luck with the bubs!!"

Colton's Mom! replied: "yes its normal you should enjoy it while you can because it tends to come back sometimes. i luckily did not get so nauseated to where i threw up and my boobs didn't hurt through my entire pregnancy only up until i was about 12 weeks pregnant. lucky for me those symptoms never came back but some plp are unfortunately not so lucky. so don't worry about it its all normal to feel sick then all of a sudden it goes away. Good Luck and Congratulations!"

~*Tiffany*~ replied: "dont worry..id have a week where i felt like id been hit by a bus, sore boobs, everything smelled completely disgusting to me and make me wanna puke..then for a few days things were peachy, then it started all over again. it freaked me out too but it was all normal..now im in my second trimester and im back to peachy keen again!"

lovemyson replied: "Yes its normal! WOW i have a 31/2month old and i remember this feeling like it was yesterday. It does seem to freak you out but yes you will have good days and bad. And you will probly even have a period of you dont feel pregnant but that baby is in there and growing probly moving around alot now even though you cant feel much!! Its ok just relax try not to obses on it sometimes its good to take your mind off the new baby growing in you because you will have 9more months to think about it. What to expect when expecting is the best book out there I would get it if i were you! GOOD LUCK and congrats"

lilpoonum replied: "I'd say congratulations you're not nauseated... enjoy it while it lasts cuz I'm sure it'll be back before ya know it."

Nicole C replied: "u have nothing to worry about ur body is just getting use to being pregnant...it may come & go or it may just stop..... when ur pregnant u go threw all kinds of changes but that's normal...if u are really worried just call ur doctor up an tell them they will always give u the right answer...."

Chris replied: "I wouldn't be too concerned about it. It's normal for things to come and go. Some days you'll feel like you won't keep anything down and just something brushing against your breasts really really hurts and other days you'll feel like you can just eat and eat and nothing will come up and just slightly tender breasts and nothing can stop you. If you are too concerned just make a call to your dr. That's what they are there for no matter how crazy your question may seem to you or them."
