can you get high on fluoxetine? No im not going to try to get high on flouxetine im not a fucking idot. Ive been through that whole drug shit and dont want to go through it again. The reason why I am asking is because my older brother is a druggie, and he'll take anything from the cabinets to sell and stuff. My concern is if you can get high off it than i want to lock it up.

Danny replied: "I would lock it up anyway. Fluoxetine should only be prescribed under supervision. It can potentially be a fatal drug in the wrong hands. high? You can get a high feeling but it doesn't usually lead to dependance."

Andy replied: "Anything is possible..."

zen replied: "no, but he could overdose and die! So, lock it up!"

Pat D replied: "No, you cannot get "high" and you cannot get addicted on fluoxetine. Although overdoses are never a good or safe thing, I can't ever recall someone dying on an overdose of that medication."

how many milligrams of fluoxetine[prozac] do you have to take to get high? [im not a druggie, my friend wants to know]

loopy822 replied: "it's not used to get you high it's used fr depression. when you use drugs for other purposes than what the doctor prescribes it for it can be dangerous to your health. all drugs have side effects."

David replied: "your friend is retarded you will not get high off of prozac lol... what you will end up doing is overdosing possibly and having serotonin syndrome and die."

Does fluoxetine affect highs or just lows? I know it's used for treating depression, but does it only inhibit negative moods or does it 'even out' your moods in general? In other words, would it lower your ability to feel especially happy or excited about things, as well a keeping you from feeling especially sad or depressed?

ozpy3 replied: "You are right it just raises or brightens the mood and can send people closer to a mania over the top. To take mood stabalisers you need your blood tested to maintain an effective and safe lecel, so you begin with a doctor and the correct diagnosis Good Luck."

Can you get high off of novo-fluoxetine? What would happen if u had an overdose on Novo-Fluoxetine?? Thanks! (Also i am not plaining on doing these i am simply worried about my sister.)

Ol' Stumpy replied: "http://www.medbroadcast.com/drug_info_details.asp?brand_name_id=371 there is the info! Basically she cant get high off of it because it takes weeks before it has any effect. However it is possible to overdose on it, the recommended dosage is 80mg so if she thinks she can get high off of it you had better show her the details"

Mello1 replied: "This URL has a fact sheet on the drug, on the fact sheet click on what interests you, such as side eeffects...........http://chealth.canoe.ca/drug_info_details.asp?brand_name_id=371"

STEPHEN replied: "Generally all anti-depressants are designed in a way that an overdose would not be fatal. Due to the very nature of depression and suicidal thoughts. However this may not apply for EVERY anti-depressant. Individual research should be done on this."

Is 40mg of Fluoxetine a lot? My doctor doubled my doseage yesterday. I've been on anti depressants since September now, they help a bit, but not a lot. I know I need to go to counselling, but its a long wait. Anyways, is 40mg of Fluoxetine a high dose as on here I tend to see people saying they have 10/20mg?

JoSePh --666 replied: "i take 100 m g a day :( i am taking it for ocd"

Yancey replied: "I take fluvoxamine which is a similar anti-depressant, and my dosage is 100mg per day....but anyway, Prozac (fluoxetine) usually starts at 20mg and can go as high as 100mg in normal patients."

Jo-Ann M replied: "yes I think 40mg is quite a high doseage. Please please take my advice.... if you can avoid moving up to 40 please do. I am currently trying to come off 40mg prozac (I need to in order to get a particular job that I want...it's a long story) and to be honest I'm suffering terribly. Bad dreams and sleeplessness, anxiety, tearfulness, aggression, lethargy, you name it. I've come off 20mg before now and found it much easier so I thought I'd be okay coming off 40. But then I've been on these for 6 years.. well on and off in between my pregnancies etc. Try changing your medication if 20mg isn't working. It's strange to me that your doctor should double your doseage without trying something else first. (But don't accept Effexor). Hope you feel better soon Jo x edit....but I must say I didn't know that the doseage could go as high as 100mg."

Maud The Skivvy replied: "This is the problem with SSRIs (of which Fluoxetine is one) - they only inhibit the uptake of the serotonine that's already available in the brain - they don't make new serotonine - this is why people need larger and larger doses over time. The drug will eventually stop working altogether and your GP will then need to prescribe you a different SSRI and then start the process all over again. I take 5htp now instead of the prescribed antidepressant. 100mg at bedtime and it's been working well for over a year now. It increases the body's serotonin levels and doesn't have the sucky SSRI side effects. I buy mine from the health food store."

Leanne C replied: "i take 60mg of the same. it is alot but docs will only give u what they think u need. and if it helps what the hell. hope you get some more help soon. take care.x"

Nicholas Wong replied: "You sounds like a person who knows what's best for you. Here are some facts or your clear and briliant mind: 1. You know taking more drugs is not what's Best for you. 2. You know that you need to go Counselling. 3. You know that these drugs only help a bit. I rest my case on what a Bright woman you are. So trust in yourself to take the best route to anti depression. Cheers! P/S: Psst..psst (whispering tone).. my dear, you are going the other way:) You are heading towards "anti depress", hence the best results you could get is "Not depress". BUT (I am going out on a limb to assume) What you want is to be Happy, Excited, Passionate, Functioning and Adjusting well to society. FOCUS your direction here instead:)"

Ivy replied: "Well, firstly I'd say 10mg is a low dose. People are normally started on 20mg of Fluoxetine then if it is not having a significant impact on the person's mood doctor's will then look at either increasing the dose or trying them on another anti-depressant. I think you just need to look at in relation to the maximum dose which is 80mg (In the UK). I've worked in the mental health field and have rarely come accross people on 80-for more severe depression and when people are still really in a bad way on 40mg then 60mg will be prescribed. I've been on Fluoxetine too, since July. I went from 20 to 40 like you. My doctor said she thinks I may need another increase but she's handed me over to the community mental health team and I assume this is something I will talk about with them when I see my nurse. There are other things that you can do to help your depression aside from counselling. There are a lot of good self help books, your doctor can give you a recommended reading list. Excercising more, even if its just walking can also help lift your mood as can improving your diet etc. Good luck, hope you feel better on 40! If you have any doubts and want reliable information you can trust Mind's website has a lot of info on Fluoxetine and other drugs."

Sylvia F replied: "The answer is : as always dependant on circumstances.. Can I firstly ask you if you are aware of what Fluoxetine is? Fluoxetine Hydrochloride is the "generic" term for PROZAC ... Can I ask your age? Can you give me a little more information please? I would like to give you an answer to your question, but I would ask you to give more information as the problems know, surrounding PROZAC apply to more specific curcumstances. Please give more information ...."

Primal replied: "I was started on 10mg then 20mg for about 10weeks. Then I got told I was meant to be on 60mg...doctors. So I went up to 40mg for 2 weeks and now I'm on 60mg which is mostly prescribed for obsessions like in OCD. 40mg is a middle amount I would say since 80mg is the max in the UK. Good luck!"

gracie_baby replied: "I've been on 40mg of Fluoxetine for OCD for almost 4 years :( I wouldn't say its little, but it's not really a high dose either. Kind of the middle"

PenguinSoup replied: "It's an average dose."

DEE CON CHESTED replied: "Prozac is a different drug, has no effect in a urine screening"

fluoxetine/ Prozac? Any success stories? I have been on celexa and lexapro... the lexapro eventually stopped working and I hit rock bottom... It was too expensive anyway... I just started fluoxetine on Saturday and I am kind of bummed out because most of the reviews I am finding are negative... I really dont want to gain weight as a side effect. I really had high hopes for this drug and would like some honest feedback... also how long did it take to work? Details?

SassyGirl 1 replied: "I didn't gain any weight on Prozac I took it for about a year but then also hit a wall with it and have changed to Zoloft. It took a few weeks for me to see any difference."

misha_jo replied: "I went through a lot of positive life changes at he same time I started taking Prozac, so I'm not sure if it was the medication alone that helped me come out of depression. I can say, at the very least, that weight gain was not an issue for me. I didn't have any other negative side effects from it, either. It's not much in the face of many negative reviews, but it's a ray of light, even if tiny. Hope it works for you."

Bianca A replied: "I have been on Lovan (homebrand Prozac) sine January of this year. I have had no weight gain, the only problem encountered was that it worked for the first month, and then i had to double the dose (ony one extra tablet a day). It has been the main thing to help me overcome self harming, and though it hasnt stopped my suicidal thoughts altogether, it has helped me realise when I need to talk to someone rather than 'get over it' It took about a week to work for me, and worked beautifully for aout a month, now im on 40mg a day, and i can feel the same changes as when I first started taking it. Hope this helps."

have been taking fluoxetine for 2 weeks now and have had one side effect help please? ok so ive been taking fluoxetine for around 2 weeks now, and i cant ote any substantial changes to my mood (yet) but i am having alot of problems with my sex drive and masturbation, this is really wierd cos i have a very high sex drive usually, ive only been given a fluoxetine dossage for a month then i have to go back to my doctor, should i come off it now and look for another solution or wait 2 more weeks then come off it? will my sex drive return if i stop taking it? thanks (im 17, male btw)

peanut replied: "Prozac (fluoxetine) will do that. It will return after stopping the medication."

Rob replied: "Alot of anti depresssant do that it is normal consult your doctor first before you stop taking it"

Did fluoxetine worl for you? Prozac? I have been on celexa and lexapro... the lexapro eventually stopped working and I hit rock bottom... It was too expensive anyway... I just started fluoxetine on Saturday and I am kind of bummed out because most of the reviews I am finding are negative... I really dont want to gain weight as a side effect. I really had high hopes for this drug and would like some honest feedback... also how long did it take to work? Details? I would like to see this Prozac study you mentioned...

Isabella replied: "Well I personally lost weight when i started it, as did my dad. I really didn't have any negative side affects. My nerves and depression got really under control in about a week, I already had a lexapro build up in my system as well so that helps smooth the transition. Hope this helps!"

Don't Tazer Me ! replied: "Prozac Studies suggested 8-10 Percent more likely to commit Suicides . DON't take it! Just get therapy, talk to people more about your thoughts, force yourself to smile and say hi to people walking down the street. Being friendly to others, giving things to others- money or clothes to needy is the BEST way to make yourself feel good!"

Crouching Doggie replied: "It's a very good but difficult question to answer. I've not had experience with Fluoxetine personally, and as it was the first SSRI which came out circa 1984, later generations of SSRIs/NRIs started touting Prozac as being "dirty" with respect to receptor specificity, long half-life, and other criticisms, but despite this it was truly a breakthrough in Psychiatry and a welcome surragate for the "old" tricyclic anti-depressants. As new,"more specific" agents came out claiming a better adverse effect profile, shorter half-time (prefered for compromised or elderly patients), were marketed heavily by Big Pharm companies. Then you had this select group of patients who had untoward experiences with Prozac and became determined to demonize it. Ironically, as agents became, supposedly, "superior" in receptor affinity and better side effect profile, Psychiatrists started finding that the novel agents (especially with shorter half-lives were frequently having withdrawal-type reactions following sudden cessation of the agent). Thus, there was a sudden increase in pre ions for fluoxetine as it seemed to work quite well for many patients with any number of disorders, it was available as a generic (more affordable, and had a longer half-life, making it a welcome surrogate to those agents associated with withdrawal. In short, Prozac is a good medication. Most people do well with it. As with any medication, there are side effects (not nearly as bad as with the old tricyclic agents which were once used), and it may or not work for you. Many people have done extremely well with it, some have even lost weight (as a bonus), but at this point it's really tough to say how you'll fair with it. If your psychiatrist feels that it's appropriate, then you probably should take her/his advice with respect to switching to it."
