How do you know if you took too much medicine? (Tylenol, Advil, Aleve, etc)? I get extremely bad cramps...horrible. At lunch I took two Advil and one Motrin. My cramps were still bad when I go home so I took two Aleve. The advil advises not to take more than 1 at a time and I took 2, and the Aleve says you can take 2 for the first dose, but not to take more than 6 in a 12 hour period. So, did I take too much? It's just that these cramps are horrible. How will I know if I took too much?

Calandrea replied: "No, you didn't take to much and it is okay to mix advil with another medicine that is why doctors tell you to alternate between two so that taking to much of one doesn't cause it to lose its effect. Advil and motrin are basically the same thing just compare the active ingredients and you will see and as far as the two aleve it all depends on the time frame that you took them after you took the advil and motrin if it was at least a two hour time difference in between then you are fine. And just in case you ever have this bad cramping again you should try midol it is a bit pricey but worth every penny it is specially formulated to relieve the cramps and bloated feeling and they also have pamprin that works just as good as midol does. Oh and btw to much motrin or advil can cause more cramping than you had to begin with and if taken for a long period of time can cause bleeding in the stomach. I hope you Feel Better."

Is it okay to take advil after aleve? I took aleve 7 hours ago. I ran out and now I have advil. Is it okay to take it or should I get more aleve?

Larry F replied: "Sure, the Aleve has more than likely worked it's way through your system. This is easy for future reference. If the "next dose" of a med is in 4 hours, the earlier med is gone from you in that time. Taking something every 4 to 6 hours would tell be that the last dose ran out in that time, faster if you're active."

becky replied: "You should be fine with a time frame of 7 hours, just becare, cause they both are .anti-inflammatories. Make sure you eat while taking them.you can usually take up to 800mg advil like every four to six hours if doct prescribes. Just rough on the gut, and are blood thinners."

How long should I wait to take Aleve after taking Advil? How many Aleve can I take? Both of my legs are in a lot of pain from exercising (and lack of preparation before the exercises). Two hours ago I took two advil, which have not helped. The aleve bottle says for the first dose (I've never taken it before), you can take two pills within the first hour. Is it safe for me to take two pills? When can I take these two pills or just one?

Turner K replied: "how old are you, whats your weight, and how many mg are in each pill ? these can play a factor. you can probably take 2 on 4 hour intervals of the 2 different pain killers. aleve.>4hours> advil >4hours> aleve. i would ask a doctor before trying though"

I have a fractured rib, which is better for pain: advil, aleve tylenol, or just plain aspirin? I've been dealing with a fractured rib, and have had surgery on the fractures on my eye orbit. I ran out of the narcotic pain killers the doctor prescribed. I don't want to get addicted to any narcotics, so looking for something for pain management.

Donald D replied: "a recent study stated that ibuprofen is actually better then tylenol or any conbination that has codeine in it. The study was focused on kids with broken bones though, they still have to conduct it on adults. At any rate, ibuprofen is your best bet."

Do either advil or aleve contain aspirin? i'm going in for surgery, and it says, "do not take aspirin products such as advil or aleve? i thought Advil was strictly ibuprofen and aleve strictly naproxen sodium? the hospital form containing my surgery instruction--are those typos?

Medicine Woman replied: "No, they are both NSAID's but they can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. They may also cause gastrointestinal tract bleeding, ulcers and perforation and can occur anytime with or without warning. I would say this is why the Dr does not want you taking anything before surgery plus they can be hard on the kidneys. The common side effects are diarrhea, nausea & vomiting, constipation, rash, stomach upset and gas. Combined with an anesthetic the chances of these problems increase. I'm sure you can take them after surgery, just not before. Best to follow Dr's orders on this. Good luck with your surgery."

Can you take advil and aleve together? I had some dental work done this morning and am now in pain, I took aleve a couple of hours ago, is it safe to advil also?

Skeeter replied: "You can take tylenol but not ibuprofen (Advil) as they are too similar of a medication. Tylenol will help with the pain and go hand in hand with the Aleve."

Chris H replied: "I wouldn't , not unless you want to mess up your kidneys. But you won't know it until it's too late!"

Can a Medical Assistant suggest to take advil or aleve to a patient? I am just curious because I know that they cannot legally write or renew pre ions. Just wondering if this is ok.

Pam R replied: "No. You should not be giving any kind of medical advice, no matter how trivial. You don't personally know the person's medical history"

MrM as Kissable ALIEN replied: "Sometimes when Naproxen does not work I'll used acetometophin. Three Tylenols. Cool Dark room. Go sleep. Put the beaver to bed. See you in the morning! ~kissies~"

Miss Melancholy Margo replied: "My poor lil beaver, I will fedex you some valium and a hot pack. That should work, when I have a bad headache that always works for me. It's usually tension. Or if ur feeling really energetic you could run to the ER and get some morphine or demerol."

Bradley P replied: "--Get yourself a big heat pad *or* ice pad, whichever relaxes your muscles most, and drape it across the back of your neck and shoulders. Some people get better results from heat, others from cold. But yeah, sometimes the tension from there can work *Up* to your head. --If that helps a little, take a hot or *cool* shower, again, whichever works best to relax you. --If heat or cold fail to work....it might be a sinus headache. Get some simple nasal spray (I use the "4-Way" stuff, it works out ok), and also some decongestant in you (anything with phenylephrine will work over the counter. stuff with pseudoephrine works better but you need your ID, a pharmacist and a Mommy-may-I to get it done--seems Big Brother can't be bothered to stop the meth trade *at the Mexicans*, can they?). Also I have had the *occasional* use of generic over-the-counter loratadine work too. Point is, unstuff your sinuses *completely* and see if that works. --Oh...and look into straight *cherry juice*. Not dilute or from concentrate, I'm talking about the thick *red juice* that comes in the bottle with things like straight-up Maraschino Cherries. The pigments that naturally come in straight cherry juice are natural pain relievers that are about *eight times stronger*, gram per gram, than aspirin. And they work a different nerve pathway than aspirin, ibuprofen or other NSAIDS. It's worth a shot. --Also....if you're stuck with tylenol or its generic forms...look into cough drops. Get the ones with dextromethorphan (DXM). You *may* or may not get ID checked for this, but the point is, the cough surpressant seems to make the tylenol work a little more effectively, provided you have some time to sleep it off. A little, *In Moderation*, can't hurt--it wouldn't be over-the-counter if it could (on a reliable basis). Hope this helps. ^__^"

Heather Honey replied: "Break a finger or toe.... That will make you forget your headache! :) Seriously, though, go and get an ice pack or heat pack. See which makes the pain lessen most, then lay down with it on the spot where it hurts. I wouldn't stay on the computer.... that's a no no with a bad headache. Get away from noises and bright lights, just go be quiet. And, depending on where and how it hurts, yu might could do the following: If it's in the forehead/sinus area: Take an allergy pill and use some saline spray, just in case it's a sinus headache. If it's in the back of your neck: Put a cool rag on your neck and just relax. It's a tension headache or a blood pressure headache. Drink some water... that helps me sometimes. If it's in your temples: Kind of mash on them. Massage them. Hope you feel better! :)"

catz replied: "try regular aspirin. i get headaches a lot and sometimes when tylenol or motrin aren't helping, i chug some alka seltzer. it's got aspirin in it, and it seems to help. i'd stay away from alcohol, anyway if i have a headache, drinking makes it 10x's worse. also, hot damp washcloths (zapped in microwave) or ice packs, sometimes help."

Dead Parrot Society replied: "I started getting migraines about four years ago. The ONLY thing that takes away my headaches, migraine or garden-variety is Excedrin. You don't have to get the Migraine one, as the regular is exactly the same. It's acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine. I also get the Target brand. I take it every day, and I don't leave home without it. (Do you think I can get some money for ad placement on Y!A?)"

MomToDavid replied: "I get the same thing, and right now at this time of the year I get it a lot. Mine is caused by sinus. I will have a headache all day and take everything under the sun to get of it and then I try something for sinus. If it is a sinus headache Advil or Aleve won't work. Pop a Benadryl it might help."

I took two Aleve several hours ago. Is it okay to take two Advil after taking Aleve? I'm thinking that I shouldn't take more Aleve and that two Advil might be a better solution. I have some stronger stuff, but I have to drive tonight.

Susan M replied: "You shouldn't mix them. They could cause stomach irritation, like an ulcer. Take another aleve with some food if you need. You already have aleve in your blood. You wouldn't need to take so much to make the aleve more effective."

Suburban Girl replied: "There are 4 different OTC pain relievers advil (ibuprofen) tylenol (acetaminophen) and naproxin (I don't remember the brand name) and aspirin. You can take each of these, and mix them if your pain is sever, but if you have taken something like aleve that contains more than one pain reliever make sure you read the bottle and take whatever wasn't in it. Look at the active ingredients on the label. As I recall, aleve has aspirin and naproxin. These are both 12 hour pain relievers, so if you need to take more take either ibuprofen or acetaminophen (tylenol). "Overdosing" on any one pain reliever doesn't do you any good. Your body can only absorb so much, and the rest goes out with your urine. It can also cause problems like upset stomach or if taken too long, ulcers. I buy each pain reliever by itself, and if I have a big pain I mix them. If a headache is my complaint I also drink some coffee or other caffeinated soda."

I have a sore back from lifting weights... What pain reliever should I use? Advil? Aleve? Tylenol? I have a sore back from lifting weights... What pain reliever should I use? Advil? Aleve? Tylenol?

Lantana replied: "Advil - it will relieve the inflammation."

Kelly R replied: "Advil works well as it is an anti-inflammatory drug that reduces the swelling at the site of the pain. Also try some heat therapy. Hot towels or a hot shower can help alleviate pain and swelling Nest time bend at the knees and don't go overboard and push yourself too far. You might do a lot more damage next time that could be irreversible"

badb1tch replied: "i know you will think im nuts but the best medicine for muscle pain of any kind is midol . I know your thinking what the @%#* but my husband use to do weight lifting competitions and when he was hurting from muscle aches he would take my midol and he said that it worked better than all those other pain meds. i guess because it has a mild muscle relaxer in it for all those craps us ladies get. I hope you at least try it . it really works for him"
