Dell batttery for laptop. 56 Whr Lithium Ion Battery (6 cell) vs 85 Whr Lithium Ion Battery (9 cell)? Which one should I get? The 9 cell battery is $40 more than the 6 cell but is it productive overtime? Will it help save me money and/ or be more convenient?

Pogo replied: "I have teh 6 cell but wish I had got the 9 cell. Lasts longer."

What is the life expectancy for a 9-cell lithium ion battery? Okay, before answering make sure you know the difference between lithium-ion batteries and nickel based batteries. Now, my family has had laptops for a long time now, and never once had to replace the battery. One laptop has been around for 6 years...with 4 years of active use. Another has had 3 years of active use. Since these are old, they are probably nickel-based batteries. The funny thing is....these batteries lasted a long time and were not even cared for properly. Nickel batteries need to have a charge/discharge cycle, but my family never did that. They also had it plugged in a lot. Now how have they lasted so long? Now on to my new laptop. It has a 9-cell lithium-ion battery. Unlike other battereis, Li-ions do not need to be charged/discharged all the time and apparently they can be plugged in even when fully charged. When I asked a dell person how long the battery would last, I was told up to 2 years! Is that true? How have the others lasted so long? Oh yeah, and I would like to know if 9-cell batteries will have a shorter life-time expectancy than 6-cells. I already know they last longer in terms of charge (about 2 hours longer). Also note that I will not be playing games at all, but I will be doing photoshop and I will use it while plugged in often.

inverse_mushroom_cloud replied: "You have discovered the ugly secret of Lithium Ion batteries. They have a much shorter lifespan than NiCads or NiMHs. The advantage is that they're smaller and lighter, don't have memory effect. In reality the battery will last longer, it just hits a capacity drop at 2 years. On the order of a 30% drop. It will drop off steadily after that. By 4-5 years, it will likely no longer hold any charge. This is one reason why it makes no sense to buy a "spare" for the unit now. By the time you need it, it will be dead too. There is also a charge cycle limitation too ... around 200-300 charges of a LiIon and the capacity begins to drop. It's just the reality of the technology. 9-cell, 6-cell doesn't matter. It's the same for both."

Can you replace the 6-cell primary battery in a dell inspiron 1545 with a li-ion one of 9-cell primary? I'm looking at buying the Dell Inspiron 1545 from their website, and I've heard about (and experienced) the poor battery life of the 6-cell primary battery in the machine - it only lasts for about 1 hour, if that. I know that the 6-cell lithium ion battery is ALOT better and will last for 3 hours (used this type aswell on a laptop). Can you replace a primary battery in a Dell 1545 with a lithium-ion battery (both 6-cell)? Also, don't want any comments on the type of laptop, unless its relevant or a very good reason why I shouldn't buy it, I don't want to hear your complaints of how some of the people on here have little or no experience in using a computer haha. Thanks, x

JayDax replied: "My Dell inspiron gave me a choice of 6 or 9 cell battery. I chose the 9 cell and got 5 hours use from it at first. 18 months later it gives me 3.5 hours. That's normal - the batteries lose about 40% of capacity each year. The 9 cell battery is heavier, bigger and sticks out from the back of the computer. Almost all laptop batteries are Li-ion now."

How many hours of life does a 9 cell 85Whr Lithium ion battery have as opposed to a 6 cell 56Whr one? I'm trying to buy myself a dell inspiron 1720. I don't actually know what any of the things I said to describe the batteries mean, so please me patient with my ignorance. Thanks!

T_B replied: "The 85Whr will last longer. More cells = more capacity. It may last 1 or 2 hours longer, depending on what you are using your laptop for."

should i get a 6-cell or 9-cell battery for my laptop? I'm buying a dell for college, but im not very tech savvy and i need some help with the battery issue. i am given two choices.. a 56 Whr Lithium Ion Battery (6 cell) or a 85 Whr Lithium Ion Battery (9 cell). how much battery life do each choices have, and what will be better for the laptop im getting... im getting a studio 15. thanks!

Vortex324 replied: "I guess it depends on how long your classes are. If you are doing a full load (3 classes) you better home there is an outlet by you if you get the 6 cell. The 9 cell should be fine as long as you don't spend the whole time in class gaming online."

Andy D replied: "invest and get the 9cell because the 6 cell isn't gonna last that long on low brightness"

Espow B replied: "the battery life not according to the cell, most laptop battery life are 500-600 times, the cell infection the Capacity, the Capacity more high, it can used longer. you can see the more about dell laptop battery info from"

Is this vostro 1500 good for $399? How long does the battery life last? It is a 9 cell.? * Intel Core 2 Duo T5270 (1.4GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache) * Genuine s Vista Home Basic * 85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery * 15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD Display * 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMMs * 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive * 8X CD/DVD+RW Read and Burn CD and DVD * Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 * Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Wi-Fi Mini Card * 10GB for 1yr Online Backup by Dell Datasafe

if you choose to get the 85whr lithium ion battery for the dell inspiron 1318, would it increase the size? Dell Inspiron 1318(9 cell)

Parsley replied: "It adds some extra weight by a few ounces. The size I'm not sure. But it fits in the laptop bag without a hitch. Never saw the 6 cell to compare. It gives a good bit of extra time unless you go all out guns a-blazing."

Harrison H replied: "The 9 cell battery sticks out about 3/4 inch off the back of your notebook. It is a little funny to look at at first, but it does NOT get in the way of anything and still fits in my notebook briefcase perfectly. The extra 50% battery life is good for two reasons, one extra length of time, and the battery itself lasts longer because there are fewer charging cycles. I highly recommend the 9 cell if weight is not a problem."

jon replied: "Lithium Ion's are rumored to long lasting, stay charged longer"

Gabe Stein replied: "Ooh, that's a tough one! Flip a coin, there so similar, I would go first with the HP but either would be fine I would look at consumer reports to help make your decision to see which brand has better support or life of product, stuff like that. Other that? What feels better (typing ergonomics and stuff like that because your going to be using it) or looks better."
